Jonathan Drew shook the cigar world with Blackened M81, the project involving Blackened Whiskey’s Rob Dietrich and rock and roll legend James Hetfield of Metallica, and now the rock star trio is at it again with part 2: Blackened S84 Shade to Black Toro! The S stands for shade, as in the cigar’s shade grown wrapper, and the 84 is a reference to 1984, when Metallica released their second album, featuring the song “Fade to Black.” The original Blackened blend was in-your-face, loud, and bold, but S84 is a bit tamer, for those who don’t necessarily want a cigar that’s going to knock them down too hard. Made in Jonathan Drew’s factory in Nicaragua, S84 contains a premium filler blend containing maduro leaves from Nicaragua and Pennsylvania, both rather stout tobaccos. The binder is Connecticut Broadleaf, and the wrapper is a golden Ecuadorian Connecticut seed shade grown leaf that balances out the entire package. Don’t be fooled, smoking this cigar is still like going to a rock concert, but you just won’t be in the pit this time!
Refined, modern packaging includes white wooden boxes and the same sleek and simple Blackened bands as its predecessor. The foot band is labeled with a simple “S84,” denoting the blend.
