Commemorating 10 years of success in the ever-growing cigar business, Undercrown 10 Corona Doble by Drew Estate is proof that even a long-time favorite can improve with a few tweaks. We all know the story behind Undercrown, how factory workers came up with their own blend similar to the famed Liga Privada after being told to cut back on at-work consumption of the already limited ultra-premium sticks. Well, a full decade later, that same blend is still considered to be one of the finest cigars available, and the family at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate in Nicaragua have concocted a new factory blend to celebrate. That blend is now known as Undercrown 10, and like its predecessor, it features a dark, oily Mexican San Andres wrapper leaf. The rest of the blend is where the magic happens. Beneath the wrapper is a rich Connecticut Broadleaf binder from the Connecticut River Valley in the USA. The filler blend consists of spicy Nicaraguan leaves that really take the experience to the next level. Is it better than the original? Well, we will let you be the judge of that, but given all the hype surrounding its debut, it’s safe to say that this is likely a cigar you will remember.
The foot band reads “All Dekked Out,” and it certainly seems accurate considering its luxurious contemporary packaging. A yellow ribbon is draped over each vitola, and the blend is denoted with a simple “10” beneath the iconic Undercrown logo on the band. Construction-wise, the folks at Drew Estate have left nothing to be desired, and each cigar is rolled to perform. Billowing clouds of smoke bring immense flavor with each puff, at first greeting the palate with spicy black pepper. Earth and chocolate are the secondary flavors, surrounded with a faint floral note hanging in the background. Woody and toasty flavors are constant with each puff, and there is a hint of espresso on the finish. Wonderfully balanced and impeccably complex, Undercrown 10 ends up just shy of the full-bodied mark, making it a bold, yet sustainable blend. The Corona Doble is a 7” x 50 Churchill built for long, relaxing smoking experiences.
While the original Undercrown blend and its variants were suitable for all audiences, Undercrown 10 is really intended for more experienced palates. Residing on the heavy end of medium-full-bodied and boasting a rather intense flavor profile, only seasoned cigar fanatics will truly be able to enjoy all the bells and whistles this blend provides. It pairs well with coffee, port wine, or cognac and is a great celebration stick. This blend will no doubt satisfy anyone who enjoys the original Undercrown or even higher-end cigars like Liga Privada No. 9.
