1 x CAO Flathead V660 Carb Gordo (6" x 60, ●●●●○ Medium-Full, Rated 95). Selected by Cigar Aficionado as the 2015 #3 Cigar Of The Year. Made in Nicaragua at the Scandinavian Tobacco factory in Esteli. Inspired by grease monkeys and rock 'n roll, Flathead is box-pressed, flat-headed, and funky. It has Nicaraguan ligero fillers. A Habano Connecticut binder, and a dark, well-marbled Connecticut broadleaf wrapper. Starting its ignition results in a strong, thick river of sweet, chocolatey flavor. The overall base is earthy, with just a few hints of pepper and coffee sprinkled about. As it evolves, a rich sweetness begins to dominate the flavor profile, giving bursts of floral and cocoa notes. Flathead is maduro and ligero at its best, with a wonderful mix of sweet, spicy, and strong. Buckle up because this hot rod gives one heck of a ride.
1 x My Father No. 1 Robusto (5 1/4" x 52, ●●●●○ Medium-Full, Rated 94). Selected by Cigar Aficionado as the 2009 #3 Cigar of The Year. Jaime Garcia crafted My Father cigars in tribute to his dad, the master Jose "Don Pepin" Garcia. Using Nicaraguan binder and filler grown by the Garcias themselves and a stunning chocolate brown Ecuadoran wrapper grown by the masters at Oliva, My Father is the perfect tribute. The wrapper leaf is perfect. Deep brown and just slightly oily, from the get-go, you know you're in for a treat. Deep spice and slightly sweet toffee flavor engulf your mouth with each and every puff. Despite being more full-bodied and flavored, My Father is incredibly smooth right down to the nub.
1 x Oliva Serie V Belicoso (5" x 54, ●●●●● Full, Rated 95). Selected by Cigar Aficionado as the 2017 #3 Cigar of The Year. The notable Oliva Serie V Belicoso cigar is the crown jewel of the Oliva Cigar Company in Nicaragua. This amazing stick consists of Nicaraguan Jalapa Valley ligero fillers, a spicy Nicaraguan binder, and a gorgeous sun grown Ecuadoran wrapper. Beginning with a powerful blast of white pepper and unmistakable Nicaraguan spice, this oily flavor-bomb shows absolutely no mercy as it transitions into a rich, woody adventure speckled along the way with notes of coffee, cedar, and cocoa. It packs a huge punch, both flavor- and strength-wise, and finishes with a thick slathering of earth across the palate. This could be the finest cigar to ever come out of Nicaragua.
1 x ROMEO by RyJ Piramide (6 1/8" x 52, ●●●●● Full, Rated 94). Selected by Cigar Aficionado as the 2012 #3 Cigar Of The Year. Made in the Dominican Republic and crafted by a boutique-style team of artisans that formed at Tabacalera de Garcia. This cigar has a unique blend of Dominican Piloto and Olor filler that complements the Olor binder and spicy, hand-picked Ecuadoran Habano wrapper. Unlit, an aroma and cold draw of simple, clean tobacco quickly turns into black pepper and earth once fired up. However, once the solid ash and razor-sharp burn reach an inch, the whole game changes. Puffing this cigar, slowly, taking time to savor the intricacies of the plentiful white smoke, will reveal a multitude of nuances. The fragrant Olor's sweetness hints of both stone and dark fruit, with the rich Piloto adding in cocoa and leather in concert, while the Habano ramps up the strength with spices and oak.
1 x The Wise Man Maduro Robusto (5 1/2" x 50, ●●●●○ Medium-Full, Rated 95). Selected by Cigar Aficionado as the 2018 #3 Cigar of The Year. This excellent stick is coated in a toothy and robust Mexican San Andres wrapper. The complex filler blend of longleaf Corojo and Criollo achieves a whole new level of sophistication and flavor. Smelling and tasting of rich sweet cocoa before lighting, you'll also notice hints of maple syrup and pungent earth that carry forward into the flavor profile once the foot is properly lit. Loaded with a hefty dose of red and black pepper plus a meaty char, there's still room during the first half of the smoke to layer in coffee, dark fruit, and cream. The second half of this medium-full strength delight provides welcome waves of sweetness, namely dark chocolate, and cherries reminiscent of a Black Forest cake.
