Arturo Fuente Casa Cuba Doble Cuatro Cigars
Casa Cuba is the first new cigar brand out of the Fuente factory in the Dominican Republic since 1995, and the first blend directly made by Carlos Fuente, Sr. in decades. A cigar talked about behind closed doors for years, it finally debuted in 2013. Named after a brand Fuente purchased in 1958, the Casa Cuba is a look back at how the company blended cigars in the pre-embargo days. Cuban-seed Dominican filler and binder tobaccos are wrapped in a Ecuadorian Havana wrapper. A medium-bodied cigar much different from other limited production Fuente cigars, Casa Cuba will have older smokers thinking about those first cigars they smoked, and newer ones wondering why today's cigars are so different.
The most notable thing one will notice is the band. This is the first Fuente brand not to have the Fuente name anywhere on it. The wrapper is smooth and noticeably missing any toothiness. Small veins can be found if searched for long enough, but what is most striking is the thinness. Despite this, we didn't have any cracking throughout the entire cigar. On first puff a strong, but not unpleasant, bitterness surrounded our palate. This quickly subsided but returned for the middle half of the cigar. Strong earthy flavors of wood are throughout the smoke and there is an extremely welcome sweet aroma. The draw was good, and despite some flaking, Casa Cuba held onto its ash very well.
Casa Cuba from Fuente is sure to have some smokers remembering the bygone days of cigar smoking. Blended by a master, this proves that Carlos, Sr. has not lost one step when it comes to making a fantastic cigar. With a body just a hair less than medium, we found a well aged scotch or single barrel bourbon to be the perfect compliment. We also suggest trying one of the cigars blended by Carlos, Jr. such as the Fuente Fuente Opus X or Don Carlos for a heavier fuller-bodied smoking experience.
