Alec & Bradley Kintsugi Corona Gorda Cigars | Selected by Cigar Aficionado 2021 #25 Cigar Of The Year – Rated 92

Kintsugi Corona Gorda is the third cigar to bear the Alec & Bradley name, this time hailing from Danli, Honduras and hitting the market with full momentum. For those who don’t know, Alec & Bradley is a side project of Alec Bradley Cigars and is the brand of owner Alan Rubin’s two sons. Their first two releases were nothing short of amazing, the last one even being blended by the famed Ernesto Perez-Carrillo, so it is somewhat of an understatement to say that Kintsugi had some big shoes to fill. That it did, with a delicious blend of filler tobacco from Honduras and Nicaragua, matching Honduran and Nicaraguan binder leaves, and a golden Honduran Habano wrapper leaf. This concoction ended up being so delicious that it easily earned a rock-solid 92 rating in Cigar Aficionado and a spot on the 2021 Top 25 Cigars of the Year.

The clean, modern packaging of Kintsugi includes fresh white 24-count boxes decorated with Japanese artwork and massive blue and gold bands on each vitola. Impeccable construction leads to a productive draw, a sharp burn line, and a long, tight ash. The journey begins with fresh, woody notes speckled with candied nuts and cinnamon. An earthy raw tobacco background soon forms as hints of black pepper, cream, and cocoa become apparent. There is a definitive sweetness and a touch of citrus on the finish, and after all is said and done, Kintsugi finishes as a solid medium-bodied cigar. The 5 5/8” x 46 Corona Gorda is the best way to get introduced to the blend and is also the size that made it to the Top 25 list, offering a crisp, fuller-bodied take on the flavor profile due to its smaller ring gauge.

Kintsugi, like its sister brands, is meant for a more experienced audience. Riddled with delicate complexities and subtle twists and turns, a seasoned palate is a must when it comes to truly appreciating a work of art such as this. Being right in the middle of the strength spectrum, Kintsugi pairs well with bourbon, medium-bodied white or red wine, or medium-bodied beer, and is appropriate for any time of the day. Fans of the previous two cigars in the Alec & Bradley portfolio, Blind Faith and Gatekeeper, should definitely give Kintsugi a try, as it brings a whole new array of flavor to the brand. If you happen to be wondering about the name, Kintsugi is a form of Japanese artwork in which broken pottery is repaired using gold or silver lacquer to highlight the cracks. In the words of Bradley Rubin, “Unfortunately, the cigar industry seems to be a bit fractured right now. We are all fighting to reduce or eliminate regulation, but there is little consensus on how to achieve this. We can all learn from the Kintsugi story. We are all better together. The passion behind premium cigars is the gold lacquer that binds.” What a profound and insightful statement, and what a great reason to support the cigar business and keep things moving! There’s no better place to start than Alec & Bradley Kintsugi Corona Gorda!
