Cohiba Nicaragua N54 Cigars
Cohiba has long been a household name to just about anyone on the planet that has dabbled in the world of premium cigars. The legendary brand has been putting out award winning Dominican cigars for decades, but now has finally crossed over to the dark side, introducing their first Nicaraguan cigar. Behold, Cohiba Nicaragua N54! This is kind of a big deal, and its release took the cigar world by storm. Produced in the STG Esteli factory down in sunny Nicaragua, this delicious concoction consists of a filler and binder blend from some of Nicaragua’s most fertile and well-known growing regions, Jalapa and Esteli. The wrapper, interestingly, is not Nicaraguan but Honduran—a Jamastran sun grown Colorado Oscuro leaf that is nearly jet black and oozing with natural oils. This blend must have hit the nail on the head, as soon after its release it nabbed a 91 rating in Cigar Aficionado and became a favorite among Cohiba fans worldwide.
The updated packaging is beautiful, the once plain and simple black bands replaced by textured silver and gold ones bearing the all-too-familiar Cohiba name, complete with the iconic Red Dot. The vitolas themselves are rustic in appearance, perhaps alluding to the world-famous Cuban Cohibas that have caused such a stir in the cigar business over the years. A firm, yet productive draw offers thick ribbons of smooth, creamy smoke laced with black pepper and dark, earthy flavors. Oak and molasses linger in the background, and a somewhat bitter espresso note finishes the profile. The retrohale is rich and spicy, and after all is said and done Cohiba Nicaragua finishes just shy of full-bodied. The N54 is a 5 1/4" x 54 short toro that is great for relaxing at the end of a long day.
Residing on the heavy end of medium-full-bodied, Cohiba Nicaragua is definitely a cigar worth talking about. Rich, bold, and complex, this isn’t the type of cigar we would expect to bear a Red Dot. Seasoned connoisseurs and those that enjoy fuller-bodied sticks will doubtless come to love this stout offering from a brand known for cigars on the other end of the spectrum. This stick pairs well with coffee, dark beer, or bourbon and is ideal for any of life’s special occasions.
