Cohiba Riviera Robusto Cigars
Cohiba Riviera Robusto covers some serious uncharted territory for the famed Dominican cigar brand. For starters, it is the first box-pressed cigar to ever wear a Cohiba band. In addition, it is the first Cohiba to incorporate a Mexican wrapper leaf. If that weren’t enough, unlike nearly all other Cohibas that come out of the Dominican Republic, this line is made at the STG factory in Esteli, Nicaragua. Long story short, this Cohiba might seem to most like anything BUT a Cohiba. However, this surely isn’t a bad thing at all. As for the blend, the fillers come from Honduras and Nicaragua, the binder is Honduran, and the wrapper is a beautiful, oily San Andres leaf from Mexico. This 100% non-Dominican Cohiba obviously seems to be quite unique, and right off the bat it has become quite a revered spectacle in the world of premium cigars.
The packaging is refined and modern, including smooth purple boxes and dazzling purple and silver bands. The box press is gorgeous, and the cigars seem to ooze with glistening natural oils. Each vitola is rolled to ensure optimal performance, each and every puff providing a thorough slathering of silky-smooth smoke to the palate. The flavor journey begins with a noticeable, though gentle, burst of white pepper, soon followed by subtle and smooth notes of cedar and chocolate. The core of the profile is earthy tobacco, and hints of coffee and black cherry are detectable throughout. The finish is bold and smooth, and overall Riviera finishes as a well-balanced medium-full-bodied cigar. The Robusto comes in at 5” x 52 and offers a wonderful way to get acquainted with the blend.
Any cigar bearing a Cohiba band belongs in the hands of an experienced connoisseur. The top-shelf nature of the brand itself, in combination with such a complex and beautifully blended flavor profile, can only be truly appreciated by those who have been around the block a few times, so to speak. Riviera pairs well with bourbon, scotch, or port wine and makes a wonderful celebration cigar. Anyone that has enjoyed such box-pressed San Andres-wrapped sticks as La Historia or La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor should certainly look into Riviera. A first for Cohiba in a couple regards it may be, but one thing is for sure: Cohiba Riviera Robusto continues the Cohiba tradition of being one heck of a fine cigar.
