Viva La Vida Toro Cigars
Following the sale of their New York retail establishments in 2015, Cigar Inn founders Gus and Billy Fakih established Artesano Del Tobacco to bring their own boutique creations to the broader market. To turn that project into a reality, they joined forces with master blender AJ Fernandez, who crafts the entire lineup at his renowned Tabacalera AJ Fernandez facility in Estelí, Nicaragua. The Viva La Vida Toro is a true Nicaraguan puro, blended using estate-grown leaves harvested across the Fernandez family farms. Built around a dark Nicaraguan Habano Oscuro 2000 wrapper, a Corojo '99 binder, and an aged filler recipe of Criollo '98, this blend expresses the deep spice and soil characteristics of its native region. The partnership between Artesano Del Tobacco and Fernandez has yielded widespread critical praise, highlighted by a 94 rating and #16 Top 25 ranking for its sister vitola, the Jester, in 2020.
Visual inspection reveals a dark, oil-rich Habano Oscuro wrapper leaf with a distinct, toothy texture across its rustic exterior. Each stick is bound with signature artwork portraying a stylized jester, giving the presentation a bold, graphic aesthetic. Lighting the 6” x 54 Toro vitola yields a smooth, open draw that releases dense clouds of blue smoke from the foot. The initial burn greets the palate with an intense blast of white pepper and heavy Nicaraguan spice, which gradually settles into a complex full-bodied profile of oak, cinnamon, leather, and rich earth. A subtle note of floral sweetness emerges on the retrohale, offering a nuanced counterweight to a long, palate-coating finish.
Engineered specifically for seasoned palates, the Viva La Vida Toro delivers an authentic, full-strength smoking experience that highlights classic Nicaraguan character. Its heavy spice and rich wood profile make it an exceptional pairing for bourbon, single malt scotch, or full-bodied craft beer, particularly following a heavy meal. Positioned alongside other notable AJ Fernandez productions like Enclave and Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real Nicaragua, this 6x54 vitola offers an expanded, slow-burning canvas that allows the blend's full complexity to evolve over an extended session.
