In 2015, Cigar Inn owners Gus and Billy Fakih sold their two stores in New York with the ambition of starting their own brand of cigars, and Viva La Vida Jester would be the first project to make it to the big time. The actual parent brand is called Artesano Del Tobaco, and Viva La Vida is made by none other than AJ Fernandez at his world-famous factory in Nicaragua. As if having the production of their cigars supervised by one of the industry's greats wasn't enough, Viva La Vida is also a Nicaraguan puro constructed with tobaccos grown on the Fernandez family farms. This means that every single leaf used in the blend is grown in Nicaragua—wrapper, filler, and binder. The result is a flavorful concoction suited to experienced connoisseurs in search of the next big thing. It goes without saying that the project has become a huge success, with Viva La Vida earning a 94 rating in Cigar Aficionado and a spot on the famed Top 25 list for 2020.
Dark and oily, the wrapper leaf on Viva La Vida is toothy and rustic in appearance. Each expertly constructed vitola bears a band containing artwork that resembles something out of a dark comic book. Don't let the jester on the band fool you, however, as this blend is about as serious as it gets. An easy draw produces copious amounts of thick, blue smoke, which greets the palate with plenty of heavy Nicaraguan spice. White pepper is the big opening, soon turning into a meaty medley containing notes of oak, cinnamon, and earth. A hint of floral sweetness through the nose finishes the profile, rounding out a bouquet that ends up being delightfully full-bodied. The Jester size is basically a fat robusto, coming in at 5" x 56 and sold in packs of 5 rather than by the box.
Made for experienced cigar smokers, Viva La Vida is full-bodied and straight forward, yet just complex enough to stay interesting. Like many Nicaraguan puros, large amounts of spice and earthy flavor can be expected throughout the experience. Because of this, Viva La Vida pairs well with bourbon, scotch, or full-bodied beer and is best enjoyed after a good meal.
