Sancho Panza is a brand with deep Cuban roots that once shined as a bright star during the cigar boom days of the 90s and early 2000s, but has since fallen into the darkness and is, for lack of a better term, unfamiliar to many newer cigar enthusiasts. Enter Sancho Panza The Original Robusto! When General Cigar hired Room 101 founder Matt Booth as their creative director, it was foreseen that seriously good (and big) things were about to happen. The re-imagined Los Statos was the first, and the all-new Sancho Panza came soon after, bringing much hype and excitement along with it. This Original blend, made at the STG factory in Danli, Honduras, features a 3-country filler blend of Brazilian Mata Fina, Dominican, and Nicaraguan leaves. The binder is a spicy Mexican San Adres leaf, and a Honduran-grown Connecticut seed wrapper finishes off the package, creating an all-new flavor profile that will open the eyes of even the most skeptical cigar freak.
In recent years, many classic brands have received a modern update as far as packaging is concerned. However, for the most part, the majority of classic connoisseurs would agree that the older is better than the newer, as the new packaging in most cases is obnoxiously overdone and veers far from the Cuban-esque style in which the cigars were originally presented. In the case of Sancho Panza The Original, however, such is not the case. The new bands are beautifully done in blue and gold, keeping the classic Cuban style lettering and overall presentation, and the 20-count boxes are plain, simple, and modern, each one color coded to denote the blend. The construction seems to have undergone an update as well, as each vitola performs beautifully. An easy draw produces more than adequate smoke production, the burn line stays sharp, and the ash holds firm. The flavor journey starts with a spicy burst of pepper, along with a heavy presence of cedar and leathery flavor. An earthy core of raw tobacco holds everything together, and notes of spice and sweetness are constantly popping up along the way. The finish is smooth, peppery, and floral, and the simple, yet impressive flavor profile never gets boring or bland. This blend finishes as a true medium-bodied cigar that is never short on flavor. The 5 ½” x 50 Robusto is a fantastic size to get introduced to the blend, offering just enough smoke time to provide a solid dose of relaxation.
Sancho Panza The Original is a great choice for cigar fanatics all across the board. Beginners will find it pleasing and easy on the palate, while the experienced should be satisfied at the amount of value it carries for such a premium stick at a great price point. The nostalgia factor is also something to keep in mind, as many long-time smokers likely enjoyed the original non-Cuban Sancho Panza decades back. This blend pairs well with bourbon, scotch, or any medium-bodied beer or wine, and its medium body makes it a great choice for long periods of quality relaxation. It is similar in stature to such medium-bodied Connecticut cigars as Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real or New World Connecticut, fitting into a fairly new class of “Connecticut plus” sticks. Sancho Panza is a brand that goes way back and has a place in the heart of many long-time connoisseurs, and the fact that the newly redone Sancho Panza The Original Robusto now has new life is a tremendous dose of good news, not only for them, but for the entire cigar world as well.
