It’s always exciting when an old brand gets a new line extension and a modern makeover, and this is precisely the case with Saint Luis Rey Carenas Toro. Altadis USA has an impressively gigantic portfolio packed with brands we have all come to know and love, some more familiar and some that have either never made it big or have fallen by the wayside. Saint Luis Rey is one of the classic brands that did in fact fall by the wayside and has for years been hidden in the shadows of the newer, more exciting brands of today’s ever-growing cigar industry. Altadis has played with the brand a bit over the past few years with some success, but they needed something bigger and better to really give new life to the name. For this reason, they turned to the famed Grupo de Maestros to craft an all-new blend, this one coming out of the Flor de Copan factory in Honduras. The blend is classic, featuring a Nicaraguan wrapper, Honduran broadleaf binder, and Honduran fillers. The flavor is classic as well, in the opinion of many mimicking that of certain Cuban cigars. Maybe that’s what they were going for, as the cigar’s name refers to the Puerto de Carenas, or Port of Havana. The blend has turned out to be a huge hit, earning a rock-solid 93 rating in Cigar Aficionado and giving new excitement to the Saint Luis Rey name.

The cigar is rolled precisely, yet bears a somewhat rugged appearance. The reddish brown wrapper leaf goes well with the Cuban-style red, yellow, and gold band bearing the iconic Saint Luis Rey shield. Boasting superb construction, Saint Luis Rey Carenas performs to impress, spewing massive amounts of thick, white smoke with each puff. Immediately upon lighting, a rich nutty flavor lays the foundation for the profile, speckled with white pepper, citrus notes, and light bursts of cedar. Moving forward, earthy and creamy flavors appear, along with faint flora notes on the retrohale. Overall, the blend is simple, yet delicious, and finishes at the sweet spot between medium and full-bodied. The 6” x 52 Toro is a popular size, offering smooth, mellow flavor and a lengthy smoking experience.

This medium-full-bodied blend is certainly suitable for all audiences. Beginners looking to add something stronger to their collection will find this cigar more than accommodating, while more experienced connoisseurs will likely enjoy the Cuban-esque flavor profile. As for drink pairings, medium-bodied beer, bourbon, or red wine should make fine companions with this stick, or perhaps even some dark rum to solidify the “Cuban” experience. If you have come to enjoy such Cuban style cigars as Don Pepin Black Label or La Gloria Cubana Coleccion Reserva, Saint Luis Rey Carenas will certainly be right up your alley. The Saint Luis Rey name has been around for decades, and it is a bit of a tragedy that it has lost popularity in recent years. However, Saint Luis Rey Carenas Toro is just the right way to bring it back into the spotlight.
