After a very short-lived retirement from the tobacco business, jewelry tycoon and cigar aficionado Matt Booth made his daring return to the world of premium cigars, and after a couple amazing collaborations with Caldwell cigars, the first “new” cigar bearing the true Room 101 trademark was born: Room 101 Farce Robusto. Made at Tabacalera William Ventura in the Dominican Republic, Farce took the cigar world by storm at its debut, giving fans of the original Room 101 brand something to get excited about. The blend is comprised of an Ecuadorian wrapper leaf, a binder from Indonesia, and a delicious filler blend containing premium leaves from Nicaragua, Pennsylvania, and the Dominican Republic. What did the people think of this formidable comeback attempt? Well, we can let the remarkable 94 rating in Cigar Aficionado speak for itself, not to mention a spot on the Top 25 Cigars of 2019.
As for packaging, Farce brings a whole new look to Room 101. The dark, refined bands and boxes give off a more serious feel than the old school Room 101s. However, the DNA is kept with the trademark Sakura flower boldly embossed in the center of the band. Construction-wise, things couldn’t be better. A solid pack and firm roll on the outside and an easy, overly productive draw on the inside make for a truly enjoyable smoking experience. The thick smoke greets the palate upon lighting with a burst of cedar and black pepper. Soon after, the rarely-used but rich and powerful Pennsylvania fillers make their impression felt, with bold, chocolaty flavor and a serious dose of vitamin N. Woody flavors meet hints of cinnamon and cocoa as the cigar progresses, and the finish is spicy and heavy. Though most of the way down this is a medium-full-bodied cigar, the strength really creeps up during the second half, turning Farce into an all-out full-bodied cigar. The 5” x 52 Robusto offers just enough time to get acquainted with the blend.
Though not exactly a cigar for newbies, Farce makes a great choice for someone looking to step up into the realm of fuller-bodied sticks. It goes without saying that those who will appreciate Farce the most are the ones fortunate enough to have enjoyed Matt Booth’s earlier concoctions. In that case, it is doubtless a must-try, for that classic feel that Room 101 has always been known for is definitely present here. Whether you’re a bourbon lover or someone who likes to sip on dark beer, Farce will pair beautifully. Though rich and strong it is never overpowering or harsh and tends to go with just about any fuller-bodied drink accompaniment.
