Romeo y Julieta Devocion Toro is one of the lesser-known special cigars in the Romeo y Julieta portfolio, but it might just be the hidden gem you’ve been looking for all these years. Released in 2020, Devocion is collaboration project between Rafael Nodal of Altadis USA and the famous Grupo de Maestros. In case you didn’t know, the Grupo de Maestros is made up of the most highly skilled rollers and blenders at Tabacalera de Garcia in the Dominican Republic, and are responsible for crafting many of the Montecristo lines. This blend, however, is made down in Honduras at the Flor de Copan factory, and consists of a heavily-aged mix of tobaccos including only the highest grade Dominican and Honduran filler leaves, an American binder, and a beautiful Ecuadorian Habano wrapper leaf. The final product is relaxing, easy to smoke, and undeniably satisfying.

The packaging for Devocion is quite different than most Romeos. The over-sized band displays a painting of the famed couple, along with luxurious gold lettering and outlining. Packed in red cedar chests of 20, Devocion definitely has the form covered, but what about the function? Well, as a Grupo de Maestros product, this stick is built to perform. The burn line is sharp and straight, the ash holds tight, and the draw is productive and smooth every time. The opening scene includes heavy black pepper and cinnamon, soon leading into a solid body of raw tobacco flavor with earthy nuances dancing in the background. A hint of coffee hangs in the shadows, and the finish is clean and sweet. Overall, this is a rock-solid medium-bodied cigar. The 6” x 52 Toro is stout and smooth, providing a well-balanced smoking experience.

Like most of the blends offered by Romeo y Julieta, Devocion is more than appropriate for just about any experience level. It should be said, however, that the intricacies of the flavor profile will be most appreciated by well-developed palates. This cigar pairs well with red wine, scotch, or medium-full-bodied beer, and is comparable in stature to such other Romeo releases as Romeo y Julieta Reserve and ROMEO by Romeo y Juileta. The Devocion name, obviously translated “Devotion,” was inspired by the devotion of the Romeo fans around the world that continue to help the legendary name grow to new heights. How devoted are you? Show it by trying a Romeo y Julieta Devocion Toro today and get a taste one of the latest masterpieces to bear the Romeo name!
