Originally started in 1875 Cuba, Romeo y Julieta is one of the cigar industry's oldest and most revered brands. Altadis has been producing the non-Cuban version of this cigar in the Dominican Republic for quite some time and it has risen to be one of the manufacturer's top-selling brands. In 2005, the Anniversario was released to celebrate Romeo y Julieta’s 130 years of existence. This is the boldest iteration of the classic brand to date. A unique tri-country blend of Nicaraguan, Dominican, and Peruvian filler tobaccos are complimented with a Connecticut broadleaf binder and a medium-brown Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. The full-flavor and body on this cigar may shock some fans of the original blend.
The traditional red Romeo band is replaced with a black one, making the smoker aware that this is not your regular medium-bodied Romeo they are used to. The quality and construction are prevalent from the get-go, but it is that first light which may make you want to sit down. Spiciness, earthiness, and a small amount of sweetness come out as soon as you light the Anniversario Churchill, but it doesn’t stop there. From beginning to end, this cigar doesn’t let up and seems to increase in both flavor and body with each puff.
This isn’t your grandpa’s Romeo. Anniversario Churchill is a powerhouse of a cigar perfect for anyone that may have dismissed the original blend as being too light. Everything you would expect from buying a Romeo Y Julieta and more… a lot more. The full-bodied nature of this cigar needs to be paired with something such as a dark red wine or something else with bold flavors.
