Romeo y Julieta 1875 Connecticut Nicaragua Bully is a unique cigar in that despite the fact that it uses a Connecticut wrapper, it is still considered a Nicaraguan puro. It is the result of a collaboration between Aging Room’s Rafael Nodal and legendary tobacco grower and blender Nestor Plasencia. This line is produced in the massive Plasencia Cigars S.A. factory in Nicaragua using all Nicaraguan leaves—filler, binder, and wrapper. The wrapper is the star of the show, however, and up until now has been nothing more than an experiment of sorts. It is a Nicaraguan Connecticut-seed leaf grown on Plasencia’s own farms that has been aged for more than 3 years. This cigar is not “quite” a Nicaraguan cigar, but not “quite” a Connecticut cigar, but rather a true “Connecticut Nicaraguan.” So how did it work out, you ask? Well, we can let the 90 rating in Cigar Aficionado answer that.

The packaging and branding is both classic and luxurious. Cream colored bands featuring gold and black lettering really add to the appeal of the line in question, and the construction of the cigar itself screams quality—just as one would expect from two of the best names in the business. The draw is just right, providing a superb amount of thick, white smoke from the very first puffs. The Romeo 1875 Connecticut Nicaragua starts off with a defined toasty note, soon turning to hay and cedar as the burn continues. Cream and white pepper become apparent very early off, sticking around until about the final third. A faint espresso note lingers in the background, and the retrohale is sweet and slightly spicy, yet unusually clean. This blend starts off quite mild, growing to a definitive medium-bodied cigar by the end. The infamous Bully size is a classic 5” x 50 robusto, offering a short, yet flavorful smoking experience.

Tame, tasty, and suitable for all experience ranges, 1875 Connecticut Nicaragua proves to be quite the versatile package. Mild-medium-bodied, it boasts a flavor profile that is both intriguing and complex, yet at the same time everything you might expect from a Connecticut-wrapped stick. This cigar pairs nicely with sweet beverages such as Champagne or cognac, but a good mild-medium-bodied beer wouldn’t hurt, either. If you happen to be a fan of the legendary Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real or Plasencia Cosecha 146, you could probably consider the cigar in question to be something of a halfway point between the two. For an unforgettable smoking experience that is both modern and classic in every way, look no further than Romeo y Julieta 1875 Connecticut Nicaragua Bully and taste the world’s first true Connecticut Nicaraguan cigar!
