Rocky Patel The Edge Candela is a cigar for those who want something different, fun, and delicious, all at the same time. Made in Honduras at the El Paraiso Factory in Danlí and brand new to the ever-growing Rocky Patel portfolio, The Edge Candela is one of the handful of Candela cigars currently available on today's market. During the cigar boom, Candela cigars seemed a bit more plentiful, but the funky green wrapper leaf has since been phased out, so to speak. This is due not only to the lack of the Candela's physical appeal but because the ultra-mild nature of the leaf made it tough to blend anything flavorful without ending up with a bitter, unbalanced mess. However, in recent years certain manufacturers have ventured outside their comfort zone and blended some very successful cigars using the odd wrapper leaf. Perhaps Rocky noticed this and thought "Whatever they can do, I can do better!" And that he did, in this case extending what is considered to be his most successful line of all time, The Edge, to include his first ever Candela cigar. The filler blend, although undisclosed by Rocky and company, is said to be identical to the other cigars in the Edge lineup, but combined with a Nicaraguan binder and this Habano seed Candela wrapper, the overall package is quite impressive.
Some Candela cigars are more of a bright, almost grassy green, but The Edge Candela is more low-key in appearance. The more pale, almost olive colored wrapper leaf gave it a sort of rustic appeal and combined with the simple Edge foot band, the presentation is gorgeous. Wonderfully constructed and offering an easy draw, The Edge Candela oozes thick white smoke that dances around on the palate, satisfying more and more with each puff. The initial flavor is a mild tobacco flavor, much like a basic Connecticut-wrapped cigar. Hints of cedar and hay become apparent, eventually turning into a creamy, green tea-infused flavor party. Mild and smooth smoking, The Edge Candela holds nothing back taste wise. Subtle complexities and creamy smoothness make this stick a welcomed addition to the infamous Edge lineup.
Any of the Edge cigars make good beginner sticks, but this one is inexorably ideal for those just getting their feet wet in the wonderful world of cigars. Mild, flavorful, and immensely pleasant, The Edge Candela is oddly satisfying, even to experienced connoisseurs. To date, The Edge Candela is only available in a 6" x 52 toro size, but that is just the right size to settle down and enjoy the authentic experience this cigar has to offer.
