It can be difficult to keep track of the multitude of Rocky Patel cigars both past and present, but all you really need to know is that the Rocky Patel Fifty is the king of them all and has just been re-released in very limited quantities. His most expensive cigar ever and limited to a mere 2000 boxes, the original Fifty was the result of a four-year-long development project to celebrate Patel's fiftieth birthday. Containing a proprietary and secret blend of longleaf Nicaraguan tobaccos beneath a double binder and gorgeous Ecuadorian Habano-seed Oscuro wrapper, they were entirely something special. Then the sticks were gone, vanished into dark and private humidors or becoming mere nubs smoldering in ashtrays.
Lucky for us, Rocky heard the anguished cries from around the world calling for the return of the Rocky Patel Fifty and had another 2000 boxes of these golden-brown and delicious Toro-sized delights crafted for our enjoyment. Stunning orange, gold, and silver bands gleam regally beneath the head and on the foot, while the cigar's seamless and oily barrel sparkles and invites a steady flame. A flourish of spice and cream greets the tongue during the first heady puffs, the strength a constant medium. Rising to medium-full soon after the razor-straight burn reaches the second third, the enthralled palate can discern tanned hide, espresso, golden raisin, cocoa, and marzipan. The cool-burning finale is a full-throttle rush full of pepper, orange peel, cedar, and peat.
Oh yeah, the Rocky Patel Fifty is a pricey stick, but this is one of those times when you get what you pay for. Even those jaded aficionados who cut their teeth on his The Edge or Vintage 1992 cigars, or even further back on his now-defunct Indian Tabac line will be pleasantly surprised. They may be thinking that they have somehow gotten over their RP phase, but they deserve to savor one of these ultra-premiums to remember that, love him or hate him, the man has some serious talent when it comes to cigars.
