The Ramon Allones by AJ Fernandez Churchill—honored as Cigar Aficionado’s #25 Cigar of the Year in 2018 with a 92 rating—is widely regarded as AJ Fernandez’s personal masterpiece. The brand holds sentimental value for AJ, having been one of his father’s favorite Cuban cigars. Over time, the Ramon Allones name had faded into obscurity, but in 2017 AJ Fernandez took full ownership of its production and branding, determined to breathe new life into this historic label and restore its prestige.
The blend at the heart of the revival is a triumph of Nicaraguan craftsmanship. Inside the cigar lies an all-Nicaraguan filler and binder blend made from aged tobaccos harvested across the country’s most celebrated growing regions. These rich interior leaves are cloaked in a dark, oily Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro wrapper that has undergone extensive aging. The result is a bold, authoritative cigar whose quality is confirmed by multiple 92 ratings—a clear sign that the Ramon Allones name has returned to form.
Visually, the cigar is stunning. The wrapper glistens with natural oils and displays consistent coloration, while the roll is seamless, dense, and expertly pressed. The presentation is equally impressive, with artful bands that pay homage to the Cuban original while embracing a modern aesthetic. The cedar boxes are beautifully decorated, offering a regal, collectible appearance that reflects the cigar’s elite status.
From the first spark, the Churchill offers an exciting, full-bodied flavor journey. Thick clouds of smoke deliver robust notes of white pepper and cedar, soon unfolding into layers of chocolate, earth, dark spice, and a naturally sweet undertone. The retrohale is bold and textured, yet never abrasive. Despite its power, the blend remains remarkably balanced, showcasing the hallmark precision of AJ Fernandez’s premium cigars. There is no harshness, no weak spots—just a steady progression of deep, complex flavor.
At 7" x 50, this Churchill size provides a long, luxurious smoking experience ideal for aficionados who value slow-burning complexity. It shines alongside scotch, tawny port, black coffee, or a hearty full-bodied beer. Seasoned cigar lovers often liken it to modern classics such as Opus X, Padron 1926, and Ashton VSG—high praise that speaks to its depth and craftsmanship. With this release, AJ Fernandez has not merely revived a heritage brand—he has elevated it. For those who appreciate intense, full-bodied, beautifully refined cigars, the Ramon Allones Churchill by AJ Fernandez is not just recommended—it is essential.
