For this follow-up to the wildly popular Onyx Bold, Fernandez tapped into his private stash of Nicaraguan Habano wrappers, harvested in 2019 and aged patiently in a dark warehouse corner for years. Drawing inspiration from this prized tobacco, he carefully blended a selection of rich Nicaraguan longleaf fillers and binders, creating a medium-to-full-bodied cigar that offers the kind of satisfying smoke we all crave on a daily basis.
Departing from the usual near-black wrapper found on the other Onyx frontmarks, each Onyx Vintage Nicaragua Magnum is a naturally mottled brown, the well-aged and oily tobacco glinting with hints of gold and red. Wafting a mouthwatering aroma and with a sticky-sweet taste on the lips, the unlit 6” x 60 cigar demands a strong flame able to get the packed foot fully alight and pumping out the initial flavors of robust cocoa, black pepper, and a chewy-rich earthiness. As the straight and sharp burn line slowly makes its way down the barrel, the palate will reveal to the tastes of smooth cedar, leather, toasted walnut, vanilla bean, and blackstrap molasses. The strength and body do rise a little during the final half-hour or so of smoking time, but the patient smoker will be rewarded with plenty of cool and creamy smoke to get them through.
For those of you planning to wait to buy their allotment of these fine cigars, do be advised that the 2019 Habano wrapper is in limited supply, so the Onyx Vintage Nicaragua Magnum will eventually end up with a wrapper from a later harvest. They’ll certainly be as delicious thanks to the blending prowess of A.J. Fernandez, but for those who like their smokes a little on the rare side, such as the Rocky Patel Special Edition or even the Cain F Limited Edition, this is an opportunity to get in on the ground floor.
