New World Dorado Gordito Cigar
Over the past few years, it seems like any and every cigar bearing AJ Fernandez’s name has become an instant success, and New World Dorado Gordito cigar is definitely no exception. Built by hand in Fernandez’s own San Lotano Factory in Nicaragua, New World Dorado continues the legacy started by one of Fernandez’s most successful lines to date. The big story with this cigar is that nearly all of the tobacco used in the blend comes from one single farm, that farm being the Fernandez family’s own Dorado Farm in Esteli, Nicaragua. That being said, New World Dorado is a true Nicaraguan puro—wrapper, filler, and binder. The gorgeous wrapper leaf used here is a Nicaraguan Habano Sun Grown leaf, and all tobacco used for this cigar is from the maiden crop of Dorado Farm, grown more than five years ago. Out of the gates, this cigar rose to the top, becoming one of the most sought-after Fernandez cigars on the market. It wasn’t long before New World Dorado earned a 93 rating in Cigar Aficionado and secured a spot on the magazine’s Top 25 Cigars of 2022.
Both rustic and brilliant in appearance, New World Dorado wears a beautiful yellow and gold band and a simple golden ribbon at the foot. Each vitola is rolled in typical Fernandez fashion, offering a smooth, easy draw, a sharp, even burn, and copious amounts of smoke from each and every puff. The all-too-familiar Nicaraguan white pepper is the first flavor to emerge, but it soon settles down into a smooth mixture of nuts and cedar. The core of the profile is a dark, rich earthiness that holds the entire thing together beautifully. Hints of citrus and espresso roll off the tip of the tongue, and the finish through the nose is spicy and bold. Overall, New World Dorado finishes as a full-bodied cigar with a flavor profile that is both simple and exciting at the same time. The 5 ½” x 60 Gordito offers a smooth, mellow take on the flavor profile and a lengthy smoke time.
Though the original New World was a great all-purpose cigar for audiences of all experience levels, New World Dorado seems to be aimed at more seasoned connoisseurs. The full-bodied nature and rich complexities demonstrated here are likely to appeal to more mature leaf enthusiasts. This blend pairs nicely with bourbon, dark rum, or full-bodied beer and is best enjoyed on a full stomach to avoid any nicotine-related side effects. After all, it is a Nicaraguan puro and it can get a bit strong at times. If you have found yourself gravitating toward such full-bodied Nicaraguan cigars as Padron or Oliva Serie V, this stick is likely going to be quite satisfying. “Dorado” is literally translated to “golden,” and appropriately so. It seems like every cigar AJ Fernandez comes out with may as well be pure gold, something clearly demonstrated by New World Dorado Gordito.
