The New World Cameroon Churchill is a spicy twist on one of AJ Fernandez’ most popular frontmarks. Despite his being one of today’s most popular and sought-after blenders, even guest starring for legendary brands like Punch and Romeo y Julieta, it’s good to see that AJ still takes care of things at home. This fine smoke starts with a fine-tuned filler recipe of premium longleaf sourced from Fernandez’ own Nicaraguan farms, also home to juicy leaf used for the binder. However, the piéce de résistance of this medium-bodied stick is the gorgeous African Cameroon wrapper used to turn the potent collection of aged interior tobaccos into a velvety everyday delight.
You can never go wrong when reaching into your humidor for a stick created by AJ Fernandez, as they are always well-constructed and pleasing to the senses. Each New World Cameroon Churchill vitola is box pressed and golden brown beneath the beautifully designed double bands. As you bring the 7” X 48 cigar to your lips for lighting, you’ll notice a woody, leathery aroma that will blossom into more floral tones as the thick smoke begins winding its way through the solidly packed barrel. The first third begins mild and smooth, providing the flavors of earth, cedar, and rye backed by a marzipan sweetness. A warm spice kicks in during the second third alongside rich black coffee, while notes of dark chocolate and caramel soothe the palate during the long final moments.
It may come as a surprise that this is the first Fernandez stogie to feature a Cameroon wrapper, but it was worth the wait. Affordable yet full of potential for many hours of enjoyment, you should make room in your humidor for more New World Cameroon Churchill cigars than you think you’ll need. You do not want to run out.
