Ever since his days of owning Camacho, Christian Eiroa has been known for one thing: BIG flavor. He may no longer be head honcho at Camacho but blending this line of smokes for Asylum owners Kevin Baxter and Tom Lazuka sure helps to continue his tradition. This sampler contains 13 Toro-Sized Cigars 6” x 50 - 54, all with the signature Eiroa flavor profile.

1 x Asylum Insidious 52 x 6” (●●○○○ Mild-Medium). Containing an expertly cured blend of Honduran tobacco as filler and binder, each stick is finished with a smooth, creamy Ecuadorian wrapper topped with a lightly sweetened cap resulting in a flavor-bomb that won't leave you crying for mommy. The vast majority will delight in the cedar and toasted nut flavors that serve as companions throughout the first third. The sweetness mutates into maple syrup during the second and final thirds, but its influence slowly wanes as earth and plum and black pepper all become more pronounced even as the strength remains steadily mild to medium.
1 x Asylum Insidious Maduro 52 x 6” (●●●○○ Medium). This smoke carries a sweetened cap and is filled to the rafters with a well-heeled blend of rich Honduran tobaccos hand selected for their mouth-watering appeal. But instead of a cool as a cucumber shade wrapper, the Maduro version turns to the stygian side by bearing a toothy Mexican San Andreas wrapper. Soon after lighting, the nectar-like goodness on the cap is nearly gone but not forgotten, a lingering influence on the cream and cocoa and spice that forms the foundation of the smoke’s profile. From a mild beginning, the strength reaches a solid medium near the midpoint and remains so through to the end.
1 x Asylum Schizo 50 x 6” (●●○○○ Mild-Medium). A Nicaraguan puro designed by company co-founder Christian Eiroa in the ‘sandwich’ style using trimmings from the Asylum Premium, each stogie contains a plethora of medium-bodied flavors entrusted by their creator to defy convention. Proud to hold its own among even the most renowned of vitolas. An open draw is to be expected, offering unimpeded access to the leather and cocoa which form the base profile. You might have to occasionally keep the burn from going off the rails, but as the smoke continues to fling cedar and cream and black pepper at your palate, you’ll decide that some amount of supervision is worth the visit.
1 x Asylum Schizo Maduro 50 x 6” (●●●○○ Medium). Rather than being a Nicaraguan Puro like the original, the maduro is made in Eiroa’s Honduran factory using a filler blend of Honduran tobaccos and a dark San Andres Maduro wrapper. Clocking in at a medium body, there are hints of cocoa and earth from the moment you light this cigar up until you are ready to put the nub down. Asylum Schizo Maduro is still mild enough to enjoy any time of day, but the flavor is ramped up just enough to hold up against a strong coffee.
1 x Asylum 13 52 x 6” (●●●●○ Medium-Full). If you love huge ring-gauge cigars that are bursting with flavor, this is the stick you have been searching for. A Nicaraguan puro, Asylum 13 is made with only the finest of Nicaraguan tobacco which is aged to perfection. Beginning with leather and dark chocolate, the further you claw your way into the stogie it will release black pepper and other exotic spices, plus some cedar, coffee, and even a unique floral component.
1 x Asylum Nyctophilia 54 x 6” (●●●●● Full). The filler blend consists of dark Nicaraguan leaves, and the binder also hails from Nicaragua. The wrapper is a chocolate brown San Andres wrapper from Mexico, which some consider to be the finest maduro tobacco in the world. This blend mixes classic maduro flavor with bold Nicaraguan body and spice, producing one of the biggest, baddest, most powerful sticks to ever bear the Asylum name. The initial blast of notes consists of earthy black pepper and cinnamon, with a heavy oak note lingering in the background. The rich tobacco core dominates throughout the experience, forming a solid backbone for the vast array of both sweet and savory notes as the cigar progresses. Dark chocolate, espresso, and cayenne dance around on the back of the tongue, and the finish is long, earthy, and spicy.
1 x Asylum 13 Corojo 52 x 6” (●●●●● Full). The talented torcedors at Eiroa’s Fabricas Unidas factory have subverted the original’s Nicaraguan puro roots by blending and bunching a plethora of all-Honduran tobaccos for the filler. A Honduran binder is applied, and then they complete the transformation by straight jacketing each vitola in a thick Corojo grown in the sultry Jamastran Valley in Honduras. After the first inch, the power has ramped up to medium-full and there is cocoa and red pepper to let you know this cigar means business. Some tangy citrus and cedar help keep the flavors balanced as the cigar develops to full, from midway to the last puffs.
1 x Asylum 13 Ogre 52 x 6” (●●●●● Full). Most barber pole designed cigars utilize both a lighter Habano or Connecticut wrapper with a darker maduro leaf to give it that characteristic striped design, but the ogre went a little further. Instead of a maduro, Christian Eiroa decided that his barber pole design would have a candela wrapper paired with the more traditional habano to give the Ogre a striking brown and green stripe. Spice, leather, and cocoa all are notes you can expect, just like in the regular Asylum 13 but the main difference comes from the Candela wrapper. There is a grassy earthiness which is present from beginning to end due to this unusual wrapper.
1 x Asylum 13 Connecticut 52 x 6” (●●○○○ Mild-Medium). Using senses honed by years of hard work, the two have entwined juicy Honduran Corojo among the Habano leaves that serve as the rest of the filler and binder to give this glorious stogie plenty of strength and character. They then temper the insanity with a creamy Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper for an entirely balanced experience. A hefty dose of spice, a hallmark of Honduran Corojo, blends well with the more traditional wood and hay and roasted coffee flavors usually found in shade-enveloped cigars. Creamy and rich from top to bottom, you will resist laying it down for a long, long while.
1 x Asylum 13 Medulla 52 x 6” (●●●○○ Medium). Here we have a true Honduran puro, meaning not only are the cigars entirely constructed in Honduras, but every single leaf of tobacco used in the production is grown there as well—wrapper, filler, and binder. The wrapper used for this blend is an authentic Honduran Corojo leaf. From first light, the earthy and vegetal foundation of the flavor profile is established. Subtle hints of nuts, wood, and cocoa are noticeable in the background, and the finish on each puff is long, creamy, and sweet.
1 x Asylum 13 Medulla Maduro 52 x 6” (●●●○○ Medium). Made by hand in the Eiroa family’s El Aladino factory in Honduras. Unlike the original, however, which was a true Honduran puro, this Maduro version utilizes a high-priming San Andres Maduro wrapper from Mexico. The first puffs bring about a crystal-clear demonstration of San Andres Maduro flavor, including a hefty dose of dark chocolate, a hint of espresso, and plenty of nutty and creamy goodness. The earthy background of the flavor profile is no doubt provided by the Jamastran Corojo leaves, and this earthy flavor is spiked with no shortage of black pepper and cayenne. The finish is short and spicy, but overall, the main theme here is classic tobacco flavor with just at the right amount of sweetness.
1 x Asylum 13 Oblongata 52 x 6” (●●●○○ Medium). For the blend, we have a true Honduran puro, meaning not only are the cigars entirely constructed in Honduras, but every single leaf of tobacco used in the production is grown there as well—wrapper, filler, and binder. The wrapper used for this blend is an authentic Honduran Corojo leaf. This Oblongata variety is essentially the exact same cigar as its “Medulla” counterpart, except for the fact that it is beautifully box-pressed, giving it a more comfortable feel in the mouth and just a tad bit of better combustion.
