Montecristo Pepe Mendez Pilotico Toro is an ultra-premium cigar built to honor one of the most masterful tobacco growers of our time. Coming from a Cuban family strongly rooted in all things tobacco, Jose “Pepe” Mendez fled Cuba to the Dominican Republic in the 1970s, later founding Jose Mendez & Co. SRL. Among all his many accomplishments, Mendez is most recognized for being one of the first growers of Dominican filler for cigars. Not only that, over the years, he helped to develop methods to further refine the tobacco and tweak blends to produce smoother, more flavorful cigars. His company, noted as being one of the largest premium cigar tobacco operations on the planet, has been in a strong relationship with Altadis U.S.A., the very company offering this particular cigar. Released in 2016, this cigar is made in the Dominican Republic and blended using the some of the finest Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers on the market. The binder is from the Dominican Republic and the wrapper is a golden brown Ecuadorian Sumatra leaf. As is obvious per the name of the cigar, Pilotico tobacco is used in the filler blend. This particular Cuban seed strand had not been grown for a good while due to disease issues within the plant, but in recent years Jose Mendez began successfully regrowing the seed in the Dominican Republic. It was first used in the highly anticipated Montecristo 80th Anniversary cigar, and is now showcased in this offering. Flavorful, complex, and highly refined, this is a Montecristo lover’s dream come true.

Each cigar bears two bands. The first is the classic Montecristo label we have all come to know and love, in this presentation embellished with gold foil, and the secondary band is a bold indicator of the Pilotico line, inclusive of a portrait of Pepe Mendez himself. The beautiful wrapper leaf is nearly flawless, bearing but a few tiny veins and sporting a delicate roll with minimal seams. A productive draw offers dense ribbons of thick, blue smoke, greeting the palate with a lovely mixture of floral earthiness. Sweet cedar and raw tobacco are the stars of the show, soon combined with nuts and a creamy background flavor. A simple hint of pepper on the back of the tongue adds depth, and the finish is clean and classic. Medium-full-bodied, this cigar is very reminiscent of the ultra-premium cigars of yesteryear. At 6 ¼ x 52, the gorgeous Toro size is perhaps the best way to get familiar with the blend, offering cool, rich smoke and plenty of time to enjoy it.

Tailored for the most discriminating connoisseurs, this is by no means a beginner cigar. It is rich with complexity, highly refined, and enjoyable from every standpoint. This classic example of a high-end stick pairs wonderfully with scotch or bourbon, and is best when puffed slowly, allowing plenty of time to take it all in. For Montecristo fans, this particular blend would be placed somewhere between Montecristo Classic and Montecristo by AJ Fernandez in terms of body, flavor, and overall strength, yet the profile definitely sets it apart from the pack. The folks at Altadis simply could not have come up with a better package to celebrate decades of tobacco excellence. Join the celebration and discover one of the finest cigars to ever bear the Montecristo name.
