When it came time to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the world famous Montecristo brand, the celebration cigar had to be something special, and Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua Toro certainly fit the bill. Released in late 2020 as a collaboration between brand ambassador Rafael Nodal, the Grupo de Maestros, and none other than the infamous AJ Fernandez, this cigar is extraordinary to say the least. Each stick is born in the San Lotano Factory in Nicaragua and is rolled under the supervision of Fernandez himself, using 100% Nicaraguan leaves from his very own family farms—wrapper, filler, and binder. It may seem a bit ironic that the anniversary cigar for a Dominican brand is a Nicaraguan puro, but just about anyone would agree that they really did hit it out of the ballpark with this one. The folks at Cigar Aficionado certainly think so, as this blend has already earned a very respectable 95 rating!

Each vitola is softly box pressed and rolled to precision. The elegant gold and black band looks lovely against the beautiful dark and oily wrapper leaf. In typical AJ Fernandez fashion, the draw is soft and easy, the smoke production is superfluous, and the flavor is impeccably rich and exciting. An enormous burst of Nicaraguan spice greets the palate on the opening puffs, soon settling down to a bold medley of black pepper, caramel, and cinnamon. Notes of earth and coffee hang in the shadows as a woody core of flavor emerges to take over the blend. A solid level of spice remains throughout the cigar, and the finish is sweet, speckled with light floral notes. Medium-full-bodied and strikingly complex, this cigar is no doubt a connoisseur-level stick. The crowd-pleasing Toro size is 6” x 54 and gives a very true representation of the flavor profile Fernandez was trying to achieve.

Tailor-made for seasoned cigar veterans, Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua contains all the bells and whistles one would expect for an anniversary edition bearing the Montecristo name. As mentioned earlier, it finishes as a solid medium-full-bodied stick and the flavor profile is incredible from all aspects. This type of cigar pairs well with just about any fuller-bodied libation, though coffee, port wine, or dark rum would probably compliment it best. As we all know, this is not the first time AJ Fernandez has been involved with Montecristo, and it is a safe bet that if you enjoyed either Montecristo Crafted by AJ Fernandez or Monte by Montecristo AJ Fernandez, you will probably love this one. Whether you are a long-time Montecristo or AJ Fernandez fan or simply want a top-shelf cigar to commemorate your own special events in life, celebrate the 85th birthday of one of the world’s most beloved cigar brands with Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua Toro today.
