Monte by Montecristo AJ Fernandez Toro Cigars
Among the many Altadis brands revitalized by AJ Fernandez, Monte by Montecristo AJ Fernandez Toro stands as one of the most acclaimed. When Fernandez first partnered with Altadis, he openly shared that Montecristo was the brand he was most eager to reinterpret—and this release clearly reflects that excitement. As the cigar world quickly took notice, Monte by Montecristo AJ Fernandez earned multiple 90+ ratings from Cigar Aficionado, cementing its place as one of the boldest modern Montecristo offerings ever produced.
This uncompromising blend features Nicaraguan Criollo ’98 and Dominican Piloto Cubano fillers, paired with a spicy Nicaraguan Corojo ’98 binder and finished in a dark, well-aged Ecuadorian Habano wrapper. Crafted without shortcuts, every component was selected to deliver power, balance, and complexity worthy of seasoned connoisseurs.
Presentation is equally striking. Golden boxes proudly display the iconic Montecristo trident, while each box-pressed Toro wears dual gold-and-black bands—one showcasing the Montecristo Fleur-de-lis and the other boldly announcing the MONTE name. Construction is flawless, delivering an effortless draw and dense, aromatic smoke. Flavors open with sweet bread and baking spices before evolving into waves of white pepper layered over rich, aged tobacco. Notes of cedar and cream round out the finish. Beginning at medium-full and building into a commanding full-bodied profile, this cigar is widely regarded as the strongest Montecristo ever made. Measuring 6” x 55, the Toro format allows the blend’s complexity to unfold slowly, providing a long and rewarding smoking experience.
While noticeably bolder than traditional Dominican Montecristos, this cigar remains remarkably balanced. It is best suited for experienced smokers and pairs beautifully with tawny port, dark beer, or coffee—ideally enjoyed after a hearty meal. Fans of AJ Fernandez collaborations such as Hoyo La Amistad or Ramon Allones by AJ Fernandez will feel right at home. AJ Fernandez hasn’t simply refreshed a classic—he’s elevated Montecristo to a new level of intensity.
