Following on the remarkable success of the original Liga Undercrown and the amazing Undercrown Shade, Jonathan Drew challenged his master blender Willy Herrera to find the best use for a long-sought and newly-sourced sun grown Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. Herrera went to work and with his team created the perfect Nicaraguan filler recipe, to include a single leaf of Nueva Segovia ligero, which allows the cigar’s namesake tobacco to shine.
Even without the name-bearing foot band, a deep burgundy red behind the familiar lion’s head and crown on the main band makes the Liga Undercrown Sun Grown Gran Toro distinct from its brethren even at a glance. The golden-brown wrapper is even more of a definite tell, and as soon as the foot is lit all pretense of confusion falls away. Mellow and smooth during the first few puffs, the flavor of the thick, creamy smoke quickly begins to set a solid, earthy foundation. The sweet spot each 6” X 52 stick is appropriately named, with chocolate, graham cracker, and allspice notes all making a mad dash towards the palate. The strength and flavor kick into high gear around the middle of the stick, with thick layers of spice, black peppercorn, leather, nuts, and salted caramel all making an appearance.
