When Drew Estate and Crowned Heads team up to make a cigar, only something awesome can come of it, and that is exactly the case with La Coalicion Gordito. Jon Huber, co-founder of Crowned Heads, admits to sharing a similar vision towards the tradition and artistry of cigars with Willy Herrera, the man behind Drew Estate masterpieces Herrera Esteli and Norteno. Collaborating together, Huber and Herrera were able to concoct a blend that is nothing short of a masterpiece. La Coalicion is made at the world-famous La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate down in Nicaragua using extremely high-end filler tobacco from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. The binder is Ecuadorian Sumatra and the wrapper is a dark, oily Connecticut Broadleaf. This blend is both classic and refined at the same time, and is sure to appeal to the most discriminating of connoisseurs.

Bearing classical gold and red bands over a dark, toothy wrapper leaf, La Coalicion certainly has the old-school look going on. The construction is on-point as well, as each La Coalicion sports a near-seamless roll and offers an easy draw. Billowing clouds of thick, white smoke ignite the palate with bold flavors of earthy raw tobacco and spicy pepper from the get-go. Hints of raisin and chocolate join the party, along with a faint coffee note in the background. More spice on the retrohale combines with a thick, creamy finish, pulling the whole package together. La Coalicion begins at the heavy side of medium-full, but by the end is an all-out monster. The Gordito size is a 5 ½” x 50 robusto that is likely the best way to get acquainted with the blend.

Bold, flavorful, and complex, La Coalicion is by no means a beginners’ cigar. There is plenty of strength, as well as a lot going on from start to finish, so to truly enjoy all this blend has to offer, one must have quite the developed palate. La Coalicion pairs nicely with dark beer or bourbon and makes for quite a conclusion to a long day. Though it may not be completely accurate, one might say La Coalicion is a cross between Herrera Esteli and Jericho Hill, perhaps the two most successful blends of each side of this collaboration. Speaking of that collaboration, who wouldn’t want to try the product of a collective effort between one of the biggest boutique brands on the market and an industry giant like Drew Estate? If you would like to, you had better get your hands on La Coalicion Gordito ASAP!
