The Joya Cabinetta Robusto cigar is a delicious work of art. A true feast for the senses. This smoke has roots reaching back to the late 1960’s when the original Joya de Nicaragua became the first puro exported from that country, and its legacy can be tasted with each puff of the exquisite Joya Cabinetta Robusto. Where many Nicaraguan stogies seek to impress through strength alone, this cigar takes a more nuanced approach to create a medium-bodied complexity you’ll seek out again and again. Key to taming the potent longleaf filler blend are the paired Ecuadorian Connecticut and Nicaraguan Habano Criollo wrappers, the latter being applied only to the head of each 5” X 50 vitola.
Whether or not you remove the tan and copper colored ‘Joya Cabinetta’ band before lighting is a matter of preference, but either way it is worth admiring the contrasting wrappers before digging in. The lighter and larger of the two is soft and smooth, while the dark, oily tip is toothy and rugged. Creamy doesn’t even begin to describe the flavor of one of these sticks, but we might as well start there. Alongside the buttery richness delivered with each deep pull, there is a wealth of cedar, almonds, Dutch cocoa, and spice. Things remain balanced and relatively calm and collected throughout the first and second thirds, but once the Criollo starts burning, a final earthy and peppery blast will send your enjoyment over the top.
Like all cigars coming out of the Joya de Nicaragua factory, you can expect a quality of smoke far beyond the meager price. Those aficionados who know only of the company’s reputation for robust cigars will find a Joya Cabinetta Robusto a worthy morning delight, while more novice enthusiasts who fear the same notoriety should experience an excellent introduction into a broader world of flavor.
