The Highclere Castle Victorian Toro is a prestigious collaboration between George Carnarvon, the Eighth Earl of Carnarvon, and Nicholas Melillo of Foundation Cigar Company. Handcrafted at the renowned AJ Fernandez factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, this 6" x 52 vitola was specifically developed to emulate the style of cigars imported to Highclere Castle during the Victorian era. The blend is a sophisticated international marriage, featuring a dark and oily Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, a savory Brazilian Mata Fina binder, and a core of aged Nicaraguan fillers. This specific line has garnered significant critical acclaim, earning a 93 rating and the #12 spot on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of 2020 (note: the vitola specifically ranked was the Churchill).
The construction of the Victorian Toro reflects the high standards of the AJ Fernandez facility, presenting a seamless roll that ensures a razor-sharp burn and a generous output of silky white smoke. Upon ignition, the palate is immediately greeted by a refined surge of black pepper and rich earth, characteristic of AJ Fernandez’s signature Nicaraguan spice. As the session progresses, the Toro’s larger ring gauge allows the flavors to broaden, revealing layers of sweet cream, cedar, and cinnamon. Nuances of dark chocolate and red pepper emerge toward the finish, providing a sophisticated, medium-to-full-bodied experience that remains balanced and smooth. This is an upper-tier cigar designed for the discriminating enthusiast who appreciates subtle complexities and a historical pedigree.
Made with the discriminating aficionado in mind, Highclere Castle Victorian is an upper tier cigar aimed at more experienced smokers. The profile is quite simple, yet subtle complexities contained therein call for a well-seasoned palate for true enjoyment. This blend pairs well with bourbon, red wine, or even coffee, and is appropriate for any time of the day. Fans of AJ Fernandez sticks such as New World or Bellas Artes will likely thoroughly enjoy the blend in question. For some of us, a good cigar gives us the taste of luxury we need to enjoy the fruits of our labor. That taste of luxury gets a whole lot better with Highclere Castle Victorian Toro, so don’t hesitate to try one the next time you are in search of something new!
