Henry was a famous American Senator in the early nineteenth century, notable for being prominent among a group of nationalist ‘War Hawk’ politicians. First appearing in the 1840’s, cigars bearing the Henry Clay moniker were once popular enough to require a Cuban factory dedicated to their creation. Most importantly, now crafted in the Dominican Republic, these premium medium-bodied stogies are loaded with choice Honduran longleaf filler layered within an oily Broadleaf binder and held firm by a velvety Connecticut wrapper from Ecuador.
We think the old man himself would be right proud of the 5” X 44 cigar that bears his name and reputation. Showing no sign of softness beneath the leathery, caramel-colored Shade wrapper, the generously packed core is ripe with a rich chocolate aroma and tastes of minerals and oak during a cold draw test. Built on a foundation of flinty earth enhanced by cracked pepper, the profile of a lit Henry Clay War Hawk Corona also displays an unexpected gentleness by layering in sweet cream butter, sourdough toast, raw cane sugar, and cinnamon. Black coffee and cashew provide depth during the latter stages of the smoke, any lingering sweetness thickening to a slightly bitter molasses that keeps you returning for just one more puff.
More flavorful than the usual Connecticut-wrapped stogies but not so potent that it will ruin your morning if paired with a cup o’ Joe, you might just nominate the Henry Clay War Hawk Corona to compete to be your new favorite. Put them up against the likes of Ashton Classic, Perdomo Reserve Champaign, or Zino Platinum Crown and just see if they can’t hold their own. It will be a battle for the ages.
