Foundation The Tabernacle Doble Corona, is a cigar made for aficionados, by an aficionado. The second line in the Foundation series, The Tabernacle brand encompasses themes from the Bible, King Solomon, and the Ark of the Covenant. The Foundation brand is owned and operated by former Head of Production at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate, Nicholas Melillo. After spending over a decade in Nicaragua while working for Jonathan Drew and company, Melillo built quite the reputation for himself, becoming known as somewhat of a master at blending hearty Nicaraguan tobaccos and producing amazing blends. With some of his more notable accolades being none other than Liga Privada No. 9, UF-13, T52, and of course, Nica Rustica. After parting ways with Drew Estate, Melillo began the Foundation brand, his first release, El Gueguense, garnering unusually high ratings and even a spot on Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 list. Then came The Tabernacle, a sort of collaboration with industry rock star AJ Fernandez. Made down in Nicaragua at the famed Tabacalera Fernandez, The Tabernacle is rolled using some of the finest tobacco in the world, a good bit of it coming from AJ's personal farm, La Soledad. Honduran and Nicaraguan fillers, a Mexican San Andres binder, and a dark, toothy Connecticut broadleaf Maduro wrapper make this cigar as flavorful as it is beautiful.

Rolled in typical AJ Fernandez fashion, The Tabernacle is precisely constructed to offer a smooth, easy draw and a plethora of thick, flavorful smoke. Beginning with a blast of white pepper, The Tabernacle quickly transitions to a smooth, pleasant, classic Maduro flavor profile. Chocolate, espresso, nuts, and spice massage the palate as a raw tobacco presence in the background holds it all together. A sweet finish and a smooth retrohale further add to the depth and complexity of the blend. Overall, The Tabernacle is an amazing display of blending prowess and tobacco expertise. It takes Maduro into a whole new dimension.

As one may conclude, Foundation The Tabernacle, is not a beginners' cigar. Like the other masterpieces in Melillo's resume, it is an ultra-premium blend made with discriminating palates in mind. In other words, only true connoisseurs need apply. Sitting at the high end of medium-to-full, The Tabernacle pairs wonderfully with coffee, port wine, or dark beer, and is best enjoyed after a good meal. The Doble Corona is basically a fat Churchill, at 7 x 54 and ready for over 2 hours of smoking. Similar sticks may include Liga Privada No. 9 and Nica Rustica, both of which Nicholas Melillo had a huge part in producing. When asked about the name of this stick, Melillo described how when he was growing up in Connecticut; he began smoking cigars with his grandfather. He considered their time spent smoking together to be sacred, and his humidor became his “tabernacle.” Quite the story, really, and quite a cigar as well. Nicholas Melillo has nothing to prove. He has already had a hand in some of the most infamous cigars in history. However, now it is his time to truly shine, and Foundation The Tabernacle Doble Corona is doubtless destined to be something huge.
