Selected by Cigar Aficionado 2020 #18 Cigar Of The Year – Rated 93

It is exciting news when a classic, all-but-forgotten cigar brand is resurrected into a modern masterpiece by one of the most dominant names in the business, and that is exactly the case with Fonseca by My Father Petit Corona. This brand started with an agreement between Janny Garcia of My Father Cigars and Patricia Quesada of Quesada Cigars, which ended up with My Father Cigars purchasing the rights to the Fonseca brand from Quesada in 2019. After 45 years of ownership by Quesada, Fonseca would now start a new life as an official My Father brand, being produced in Nicaragua at one of the most state-of-the-art cigar factories on the planet. This cigar is a Nicaraguan puro, meaning that every single leaf is of Nicaraguan origin—wrapper, filler, and binder. The wrapper is a shade grown Corojo 99 Rosado leaf, something that anyone who has enjoyed one of the many My Father blends should be familiar with. The new Fonseca brand was an instant success, garnering rave reviews from cigar nuts all over the planet. In fact, the end result was so good it earned a prompt 93 rating in Cigar Aficionado, as well as a spot on their prestigious Top 25 list for 2020.

My Father Cigars did a phenomenal job with the packaging, keeping the bold, well-known Fonseca logo as the main attraction while adding their own signature across the bottom of the artwork. The vitolas themselves are undeniably Cuban in appearance, including triple caps, foot bands, and Cuban-esque rugged wrapper leaves featuring a toothy texture and intricate veins throughout. Expert construction lends to an even burn with a productive draw to boot, meaning ample amounts of silky blue smoke with each and every puff. A burst of Don Pepin’s signature Nicaraguan pepper upon first light indicates that this is by no means the mild and tame Fonseca brand you may have enjoyed in the past. Though not overpowering, this spice definitely adds quite a kick to the blend, hanging around until the very last puff. As the cigar evolves, definitive notes of cedar combine with a Cuban-style earthiness to tie this simple, yet impressive flavor profile together. Notes of cinnamon and flora sweetness on the finish further enhance the experience, and by the end Fonseca has built up to a heavy medium-full-bodied cigar. The 4 ¼” x 40 Petit Corona is short and intense, and is so good that it is the size that earned its way into the Top 25 list.

It’s well known that My Father Cigars is a company that caters to the true connoisseurs. Such case remains with this all-new Fonseca blend. Beginners need not apply. For those who have plenty of experience under their belts, however, this blend is likely to be a box-worthy winner in your book. Simple, yet strong and satisfying in all the right ways, Fonseca by My Father pairs well with your favorite classic cigar libations such as bourbon, scotch, or even dark rum. The blend certainly sports some heavy My Father DNA to it, and is similar in stature to some of the Garcias’ other big names such as El Centurion or My Father La Opulencia. Some of us have enjoyed the Central American Fonsecas of Old, and some may have even enjoyed the classic Cuban brand. Whatever the case, Fonseca by My Father Petit Corona is all-new, and offers something of great value to both the nostalgic cigar connoisseurs and fans of modern marvels alike.
