The re-blended Espinosa Habano No. 4 Robusto is a powerhouse cigar from a man unafraid to improve upon past success. The original Habano released by Erik Espinosa’s La Zona factory was a certified hit, raking in a couple of solid 90 ratings and delighting fans of medium to full smokes worldwide. This might be enough for your average cigar manufacturer, but Espinosa knew he could do more with what was basically one of his core brands. To this end, choice Nicaraguan tobaccos were sourced to create a complex and potent filler and binder combination that evolved into a full-bodied, full-strength masterpiece with the addition of a meaty Ecuadorian Habano wrapper of exquisite quality.
A new band design, resplendent with blue and gold, decorates the retooled Espinosa Habano No. 4 Robusto in elegant counterpoint to the dark, leathery, and oily wrapper. Wafting herbal and woody aromas, the unlit vitola displays excellent construction technique and feels substantial beneath the fingers. Clipped and aflame, the slowly smoldering barrel of the cigar releases cedar, alfalfa, cashew, and black pepper flavors in dense waves of creamy smoke. Transitioning towards the second half, a succulent floral scent in the air accompanies deep pockets of coffee, spice, and leather on the tongue. There’s even a touch of sweetness that cuts through the strength to keep you reaching for the nub.
As amazing of a feat as it was for Espinosa to improve on his original Habano, the fact that the price of this new cigar remains in line with the old is just as awe inspiring. Fans of the original should not despair because the new Espinosa Habano No. 4 Robusto remains faithful to the spirit of the past while forging a path to the hearts and minds of those aficionados not yet lucky enough to have discovered the brand. Either way, it is time to get to smoking!
