When a cigar industry icon celebrates an anniversary by introducing a new cigar, it’s always a big deal, and with Eiroa The First 20 Years Colorado 6” x 60, “big deal” is an understatement. Christian Eiroa is best known as the former President of Camacho Cigars. He was among the pioneers of the powerhouse movement that introduced ultra-full-bodied cigars to an otherwise conservative market. His and his families brands, Camacho and Baccarat, had achieved huge success and were known for unmatched quality, consistency, and value. Soon after his brands were bought out by Davidoff in 2008, Eiroa left to embark on a new venture in which he founded Eiroa Cigars, a brand that today is known to produce some of the most exclusive cigars in the world. All this happened over a period of 20 years, a period for which Eiroa is now celebrating with the releases of the “First 20 Years” series. This Colorado selection is the second release in the First 20 Years lineup, handmade at the El Aladino factory in Honduras using all Honduran tobacco grown on the Eiroa Family Farms. For this release, the wrapper leaf has been extensively aged and turned a beautiful reddish brown color, hence the name “Colorado,” Spanish for “colored red.” The result is a world class cigar built with the serious connoisseur in mind.
The luxurious cedar chest housing the cigars is only the beginning. The all-so-familiar Eiroa seal is lovingly embossed on each gold and red band along with the words “Salud Amor y Pesetas,” an old Spanish saying meaning “Health, Love, and Money.” Each cigar is crafted at the world class level and seamlessly rolled before being definitively box pressed and long aged in cedar. The construction is absolutely impeccable, the burn is sharp, and the draw is easy and unusually generous. A burst of cedar followed by a strong nutty core is immediately present at first light. This base is soon followed by creamy raw tobacco, hints of white pepper and nutmeg, and sweet spice. Cedar increases along the way, in addition to the overall strength of the cigar, which by the midpoint is indubitably a full-bodied stick. Cinnamon and a toasty bread note lie faintly in the background, and the finish is bold and laced with intense spice. Christian Eiroa has been known in the past to make some of the world’s strongest cigars, but in this case strength and complexity match together in beautiful harmony. The First 20 Years Colorado is a true masterpiece of a full-bodied cigar. The chunky 6” x 60 is a gordo size cigar for all those that like their cigars larger-than-life. Expect cool, flavorful smoke and a slower burn.
To say this cigar is in a league of its own wouldn’t be saying enough. In today’s world of fine cigars, it seems to be a race to make the strongest stick with nothing else in mind. Attention to details such as balance or complexity seem to be a thing of the past at times.
