The E.P. Carrillo Pledge Prequel is one of the most anticipated releases in modern cigar history. As the third entry in Ernesto Perez-Carrillo’s acclaimed Perez-Carrillo Series—following La Historia and Encore—Pledge has been hailed as the master blender’s crowning achievement. Crafted by only the most skilled torcedors at Tabacalera La Alianza in the Dominican Republic, this exceptional cigar showcases a blend of ultra-premium tobaccos: Nicaraguan filler, an Ecuadorian binder, and a rich, dark Connecticut Habano wrapper grown in the U.S.A. Its pedigree is impressive—La Historia earned a 95 rating and the No. 2 ranking in 2014, while Encore scored a 96 and claimed the No. 1 spot in 2018. In 2020, Pledge exceeded even those lofty standards, earning an extraordinary 98 rating and the title of Cigar Aficionado’s No. 1 Cigar of the Year.
Presentation is as elegant as the cigar itself. Each stick is box-pressed, adorned with classic blue-and-gold Perez-Carrillo artwork, and finished with a gold ribbon around the foot. The construction is flawless: expect an effortless draw, thick clouds of smoke, an even burn, and firm gray ash. The 5" x 50 Prequel size—the very vitola that won the top spot—offers a bold yet refined profile. It begins with black pepper and lively Nicaraguan spice, then transitions into a smooth medley of earthy tobacco, roasted nuts, and espresso. Subtle notes of cinnamon, cocoa, and fresh bread appear throughout, while the retrohale delivers a delicate sweetness that ties everything together. Medium to full in body, Pledge remains remarkably balanced from start to finish.
Like all cigars in the Perez-Carrillo Series, Pledge is tailored for seasoned enthusiasts who appreciate complexity and depth. Its robust character pairs beautifully with red wine, cognac, or rich black coffee, making it a perfect choice for celebrating life’s milestones. Standing alongside La Historia and Encore—and comparable to iconic ultra-premium brands like Padron 1964 and Diamond Crown Maximus—Pledge is a testament to Ernesto Perez-Carrillo’s unrivaled blending expertise. Highly limited and in constant demand, this 5-pack is your chance to experience one of the greatest cigars of our time.
