E.P. Carrillo Allegiance Confidant is the fourth installment in the world-famous Perez-Carrillo lineup, following La Historia, Encore, and Pledge. Some would say this series is one of the most successful ever, as two have earned cigar of the year and one was a close runner-up. That being said, Allegiance had to have a lot to bring to the table. What is interesting about this cigar, however, is that unlike the first 3, Allegiance is made hundreds of miles away from Carrillo’s own Tabacalera La Alianza in the Dominican Republic. In fact, Allegiance isn’t even made by one of Carrillo’s own factories! You read that right, this stick is hand-built in Esteli, Nicaragua, at Tabacalera de Oliva! As for the blend, we have Nicaraguan binders and fillers and, of course, an Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper leaf (Would you expect anything less from E.P. Carrillo?). The first run consisted of 150,000 cigars, but more may be rolled depending on demand. All things considered, it goes without saying that Allegiance was destined for big things. Soon after its release, it scored a couple of 95 ratings in Cigar Aficionado, proving it had what it takes to be one of the Perez-Carrillo cigars.
Bearing the all-too-familiar Perez-Carrillo Series attire, Allegiance stands out from the crowd with bright green and gold colors. The green ribbon around the foot denotes the brand, and the overall presentation is impeccably gorgeous. Looks aren’t where it ends, though. Each and every stick is made to exact specifications, undergoing rigorous quality inspections throughout the production process. This stick performs as well as any other cigar with E.P. Carrillo’s name on it, offering an easy, productive draw and copious clouds of thick, white smoke. This cigar opens up with a burst of spicy Nicaraguan pepper, quickly settling down to an array of cedar, dark chocolate, and cinnamon. The entire flavor profile is built around a rock-solid core of earthy raw tobacco goodness. The finish is long, smooth, and powerful, yet, all in all Allegiance finishes as a solid, medium-full-bodied cigar. At 6” x 52, the Confidant offers a lengthy and flavorful smoking experience.
While there is nothing particularly fancy about the blend itself, Allegiance, like its other Perez-Carrillo counterparts, is aimed at a more experienced crowd. Considered an ultra-premium offering, this blend is medium-full-bodied, complex, and satisfying. It pairs well with scotch, bourbon, or cognac, and is a great way to settle down after dinner. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that this cigar is destined for greatness. Following in some of the biggest footsteps in cigar history, it is already on the right path.
