We live in an era where, seemingly on a daily basis, another “once upon a time” cigar is being brought back to life. This is definitely the case with Cuba Aliados Original Blend Churchill, which is, in essence, the resurrection of one of the biggest brands of the Cigar Boom era. When Oliva purchased the rights to Puros Indios and Cuba Aliados in 2021, the plan was to make 2 separate Cuba Aliados blends. One would be made in the Dominican Republic by E.P. Carrillo for a limited run, and this blend, the Original Blend, would be the regularly produced product, handmade down in Honduras by none other than the Eiroa family, once known for the original Camacho brand. Both plans were executed, and both have been hugely successful. This particular blend is made at Julio Eiroa’s Fabrica de Puros Aladino factory in Jamastran using nothing but the choicest Honduran tobacco. That’s right, this cigar is a Honduran puro, and one of just a handful on today’s market, meaning all tobacco—wrapper, filler, and binder—comes from Honduras. A couple of swift 90 ratings in Cigar Aficionado straight out of the gate were proof enough that this stick is a winner, but we will let you be the judge of that.
From the classic dress boxes to the revamped brand logo scrolled across each band, it’s evident from the get-go that this is an old school style cigar. Fans of the old Cuba Aliados brand should be taken back in time by the packaging alone. As for construction, well, let’s just say Julio Eiroa doesn’t cut corners when he makes cigars. A soft, productive draw and a boatload of thick, white smoke on each puff ensure that the delicious flavor profile is enjoyed to the full. Speaking of flavor, Cuba Aliados Original Blend starts off with some mild pepper and quickly turns creamy and vegetal, along with some floral bursts on the retrohale. A solid, earthy core holds the entire package together, and the finish is pronounced but clean. Notes of grass, cocoa, and cedar are felt here and there along the way, and after all is said and done, this stick finishes as a solid medium-bodied cigar. The 7” x 50 Churchill is a great size to sit back and relax with, offering up to a couple of solid hours of smoking pleasure.
Though probably not intended for a younger audience, Cuba Aliados Original Blend is certainly appropriate for cigar smokers of all experience levels. Medium-bodied, fresh, and not exceedingly complex, it serves the purpose as an all-around, anytime smoke for just about any and every occasion. It pairs well with medium-bodied beer, bourbon, or white wine, and is similar in stature to some of the old classics such as Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real or Punch. Whether you want to get nostalgic and compare it to the old blend or you just want a great new cigar that is enjoyable on every front, Cuba Aliados Original Blend Churchill is a rock-solid choice that will never disappoint.
