Cuba Aliados by E.P. Carrillo Torpedo Cigars
In recent years, there’s been an ongoing trend of resurrecting cigar brands that were once household names, but have all but vanished along the years as the cigar industry evolved. One of the more anticipated of these resurrections, Cuba Aliados by E.P. Carrillo Torpedo has caused quite a stir in the community. After all, who better than the “Godfather of Boutique Cigars” to be tasked with giving new life to an old name? After Oliva recently purchased the rights to both Cuba Aliados and Puros Indios, they decided to split the Cuba Aliados into two separate lines—the standard regular production line, made in Honduras by Julio Eiroa, and this one, said to be limited to a total production of 15,000 boxes, all made at Tabacalera La Alianza in the Dominican Republic under the supervision of Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Jr. The blend is something you might expect from the man himself, incorporating a Dominican and Nicaraguan filler blend, a Nicaraguan binder, and, of course, E.P. Carrillo’s signature Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper leaf. The blend must have worked, as soon after its release it earned a rock-solid 94 rating in Cigar Aficionado.
The packaging is a beautiful modern take on a classic, from the dark brown cabinet boxes to the all-too-familiar Cuba Aliados logo proudly scripted across the band. The construction is precise and bearing all the characteristics of an ultra-premium cigar, including a steady, overly productive draw, a tight ash, and a sharp burn line. Thick clouds of smoke are produced with each and every puff, at first opening up with a mixture of black pepper and sweet floral notes. An earthy core forms the foundation of the flavor profile, with notes of cocoa, espresso, and citrus dancing along the way. The finish is smoky, spicy, and clean, with just a hint of floral flavor through the nose. The blend is similar to, yet quite a bit more refined than the monsters of the cigar boom such as Punch, Romeo y Julieta, or E.P. Carrillo’s own La Gloria Cubana. This lovely stick finishes just shy of full-bodied and is delicately balanced and complex. The 6” x 54 Torpedo features a long tapered head, offering a comfortable bite and more concentrated flavor.
Made for the seasoned connoisseur, Cuba Aliados by E.P. Carrillo has no place in a beginner’s humidor. It is beautifully blended to bring both complexity and a classic feel to the table and must be savored by an experienced palate in order to get the credit it deserves. This stick, being medium-full-bodied, pairs wonderfully with bourbon, red wine, or any medium-full-bodied beer, and is great for special occasions. Speaking of special, get this one while you can, because as mentioned earlier, it is a limited run. Whether you are a modern smoker looking to for an amazing and enjoyable experience or a long-time connoisseur that can truly appreciate the fact that the label of this stick bears the names of two all-time greats, Cuba Aliados by E.P. Carrillo Torpedo is sure to provide smoking pleasure like you’ve never had.
