Crowned Heads Ozgener Family Bosphorus B54 Cigars
Tim Ozgener left the cigar world over a decade ago, vowing that he was, in fact, finished. However, very few cigar icons ever stay away for good, and thankfully for us, neither has Ozgener, as the legend has now returned, partnering with Crowned Heads to bring about his first comeback hit: Ozgener Family Cigars Bosphorus B-54. It was rumored early into his retirement that Ozgener may have been working with Crowned Heads from the get-go, but those rumors promptly fell by the wayside, and the memory of the former front man for CAO cigars faded along with them. For this reason, it came to many as quite a pleasant surprise when his return was announced, and the cigar accompanying it was to be something big. Big doesn’t begin to describe the stellar 93-rated Nicaraguan gem bearing his family’s name, rocking a crazy blend of fillers from the Esteli, Jalapa, and Ometepe regions of Nicaragua. The stick has 2 binders, a Nicaraguan leaf and an Ecuadorian Connecticut. As for the wrapper, they went with a gorgeous Ecuadorian Sumatra leaf, somewhat of a throwback to the standouts of the Cigar Boom era when Ozgener rose to success. This line is named after the Bosphorus Strait, a natural strait in Turkey where Ozgeners parents were born.
The packaging for this blend is nothing short of beautiful, featuring colorful boxes and bands with gold accents and big, bold lettering. Ozgener never cut corners on his logos, so this comes as no surprise. The construction is incredible on every stick, once again no surprise there, as you might recall that Tim Ozgener is the one that made “draw testing” a thing back in the day. The first thing you might notice about this box-pressed beauty is that the smoke production is almost too good. Billowing clouds of thick smoke fill the room with each and every puff, and the flavor of the rich blend immediately makes its presence felt. An immediate bombardment of earthy, grassy flavor begins from first light, soon sparked with interesting notes of pine, cinnamon, and red pepper flakes. The earthy core of the flavor profile screams with a heavy presence of aged raw tobacco, and the finish has just a touch of spice. Bosphorus finishes as a full-bodied stick, so it is not for the faint of heart. The massive B-54 comes in at 6 ½” x 54 and offers a lengthy, ultra-flavorful smoking experience.
Back in the day, CAO cigars offered something for everyone, and for the most part, they were pretty acceptable for a wide audience. Such is not the case with Ozgener Family Cigars Bosphorus. This full-bodied, complex beast of a cigar is meant for long-time cigar connoisseurs, likely the ones that enjoyed Ozgeners creations back in the early 2000s. It takes someone with a well-developed palate to truly enjoy such a masterpiece. This cigar pairs well with bourbon, cognac, or full-bodied beer and is best enjoyed after a meal or on a cool evening. Though in pretty much a class of its own, something about it seems similar to cigars such as Allegiance by EP Carrillo or even Padron Natural. If either of those sticks appeal to you, this one will probably put a smile on your face. Maybe you are a fan of Ozgener’s world-famous concoctions from the glory days of classic cigars, or maybe you just want a strong, complex blend that is new and exciting. Either way, Ozgener Family Cigars Bosphorus B-54 is definitely a cigar to try.
