C.L.E. Prieto 660 is one of the latest cigars from the master of powerhouse cigars himself, Christian Eiroa. Made in Nicaragua, C.L.E. Prieto is not a powerhouse cigar per se, but is the first maduro offering from C.L.E. Cigars, meaning it’s bound to be bold, sweet, and darn delicious. Introduced as part of a 2-blend release, Prieto, translating as slang for “dark” is the sister cigar of C.L.E. Chele, which translates as, you guessed it, “light.” Prieto is blended with a luxurious recipe of Nicaraguan filler and binder tobaccos and finished with a jet-black USA Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper. So how did Eiroa do with his first maduro cigar under his own brand name? Pretty good, apparently, as Prieto promptly earned a rock-solid 92-rating in Cigar Aficionado soon after its release, as well as the 17th spot in the famed magazine’s Top 25 cigars of 2017. With such tremendous accolades, Prieto has already proven itself as one of the most successful sticks ever released under the C.L.E. brand name.
Firmly constructed, oily, and dark, Prieto is rolled with masterful precision to ensure an easy draw and a massive smoke output. Billowing clouds of thick white smoke coat the palate with immense layers of thick, chewy maduro flavor, beginning with earthy tobacco and evolving into a whirlwind of chocolate and coffee. Sweet and nutty throughout, Prieto finishes with a crisp, velvety smooth finish and is never overpowering. Residing just outside the realm of ultra-full-bodied (the range of many of Eiroa’s past concoctions), Prieto is heavy on the flavor, yet easy smoking and enjoyable.
