A year after its release, and following a seemingly endless number of failed blends, Herrera finally crafted a cigar that would easily waltz onto the Cigar Aficionado Top 25 of 2013.
1 x Gran Habano Azteca Gran Robusto (6" x 54, ●●●●● Full). A pungent aroma foretells the pre-light flavor of loamy earth, which prepares the palate for thick clouds of smoke full of espresso and rye toast. A creamy caramel sweetness emerges from the midpoint and continues to the finish, accompanied by more robust flavors of oak, chocolate-covered almonds, and leather.
1 x Camacho Corojo Robusto (5" x 50, ●●●●● Full). Billowing clouds provide the smoker with plenty of white pepper and cedar from the beginning, gradually ramping up the experience with malted sweetness and earthy black soil notes as the first third comes to an end. A nutmeg-like spice makes an appearance during the second third, and the final stages are awash in cocoa and currants.
1 x Camacho Ecuador Robusto (5" x 50, ●●●●● Full). Where this cigar really shines, of course, is in the taste it imparts to the plumes of medium- to full-bodied smoke that soak into your palate. 1 x Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Robusto (5 1/2" x 50, ●●●●○ Medium-Full, 92-Rated). Selected by Cigar Aficionado as the 2004 #22 Cigar of the Year. Firmly constructed and nearly seamless in the roll, it offers a smooth draw that produces silky gray smoke, delighting the palate with a rich, earthy flavor profile. Definitive notes of cocoa and black pepper are boldly present, along with plenty of raw tobacco and a subtle grassy undertone. 1 x Romeo Y Julieta Reserva Real Robusto (5" x 52, ●●○○○ Mild-Medium). Voluminous puffs of smoke appear almost instantaneously upon lighting. This stick certainly doesn’t lack flavor. The burn is flawless, and the draw remains smooth and easy all the way to the nub. The only thing we found ourselves wanting was more.
1 x Excalibur Natural Epicure (5 ¼” x 50, ●●●○○ Medium). Its twin binder creates a solid foundation for the leather and espresso notes that emerge as soon as the cigar is lit. The smoke remains refreshing and enjoyable, with the second third introducing a honeycomb sweetness that excites the palate while preparing it for a rush of nutmeg and allspice layered into the foreground as the cigar approaches the nub.
1 x AVO XO Intermezzo (5” x 50, ●●●○○ Medium). Expertly rolled to ensure a firm yet plentiful draw, the Avo XO delivers heavy blue smoke that envelops the palate with a luxurious medley of refined flavors, including cedar, molasses, raw tobacco, and earth. A subtle hint of brandy and a sweet, clean finish tie everything together beautifully.
1 x The Edge Corojo Toro (6” x 52, ●●●●○ Medium-Full). For this cigar, a wave of spicy white pepper kicks things off, developing into a medley of earthy nuances, including cedar, cocoa, and caramel. Cinnamon and red pepper make appearances along the way, all tied together by a core of rich, spicy tobacco flavor. The finish is crisp and astonishingly balanced.
1 x Cohiba Blue Robusto (5 ½” x 50, ●●●○○ Medium). The effortless draw consistently coats the palate with rich, flavorful smoke with each puff. Cohiba Blue opens with a distinct creamy texture and rich flavors of white pepper and rolled oats. Soon, notes of cedar and coffee begin to emerge, accompanied by bursts of earthy tobacco flavor. Simple and enjoyable.
1 x Oliva Serie O Toro (6" x 50, ●●●●○ Medium-Full, 92-Rated Blend). The plentiful draw of this stick produces ultra-rich white smoke, bombarding the palate with heavy spice and hints of milk chocolate and cinnamon. Full-bodied yet mellow, it is never overpowering. The Churchill size variation of this blend was selected by Cigar Aficionado as the 2013 #11 Cigar of the Year.
