Just when you think you’ve seen it all, something new appears on the horizon and today’s revelation is the Brick House Double Connecticut Robusto cigar. You may wonder just for a second what’s so special about it, but then you realize it’s all right there in the name. That’s right, those rascals over at J.C. Newman, America’s oldest family-run cigar company and purveyor of so many of your favorites from Quorum to Diamond Crown, have defied convention yet again. The first Connecticut is a juicy and flavorful Broadleaf binder utilized to contain the wealth of Nicaraguan longleaf filler at the core of each medium-bodied 5” X 54 vitola. The second is a creamy Connecticut Shade wrapper which grants the smoke a cool, refined character.
The stars and stripes foot band which graces each Brick House Double Connecticut Robusto is an easy way to identify this frontmark compared to the ever-popular original Brick House, but the oily and smooth maple-colored wrapper should be just as much of a clue. The aroma from each barrel is characteristically Shade, namely grassy with a touch of barnyard, but the Broadleaf binder does waft through with hints of cocoa. Beginning mild and sweet, a lit Double Connecticut Robusto delivers ample smoke containing the flavors of cedar, leather, nutmeg, and a touch of honey. The strength rises slowly throughout the straight, long burn, accompanied by walnut, espresso, bittersweet chocolate, allspice, and citrus.
Priced to be the next crowd favorite at a backyard barbeque, this is one of those rare Connecticut cigars where you’ll also want to keep a few tucked away to give them a chance to age. One day you’ll be enjoying an old Brick House Double Connecticut Robusto with your favorite Scotch and you’ll realize you’re glad you listened to us.
