Mr. Melanio Oliva was the brain behind Oliva cigars. Though he didn't come up with the brand name, he was the one who started the tobacco-growing business in Cuba in the 1800s. Later on, he had to suspend operations due to the Cuban Independence war in which he was an active participant. Again he resumed growing tobacco for a certain period and then handed the operations over to his son Facundo Oliva. Facundo continued growing tobacco until a period when his son Gilberto took over.

Moving out of Cuba

Soon after, Castro came into power, under whom many reforms were introduced. One reform was the nationalization of businesses which also included the tobacco business. This move prompted Gilberto to become a tobacco broker. Later, he decided to again start cultivating tobacco, but he couldn't do it in Cuba. He then went on a mission to find the ideal country that would help him create the Cuban tobacco product. Finally, he found the fertile lands of Nicaragua, which were perfect for growing Cuban tobacco.

After working for a decade in Nicaragua, he had to move out of the country due to a revolution that began in 1979. After some time elapsed, he came back to Nicaragua in 1995, but this time he set up a cigar manufacturing unit. He was producing cigars under the brand "Gilberto Oliva," which was later shortened to "Oliva".

The Oliva brand gradually expanded its business and its production. By 2005 it was producing 6 million cigars every year, and soon the company doubled its production, producing 13 million cigars per year. Today, the company is headquartered in Miami, Florida, and is run by the children of Gilberto in partnership with J. Cortes Cigars.

This cigar is crafted using Nicaraguan Liger long-fillers, which are decorated in Nicaraguan Habano binder, and uses a broad-leaf sun-grown wrapper.
