These past few months, I have been lucky enough to smoke all the cigars included in Cigar Aficionado’s #2 Cigars of the Year Sampler. There were quite a bit of surprises within this group of cigars, even thinking that most could have actually taken the #1 spot on Cigar Aficionado's list. BUY THE 5-PACK SAMPLER

Below are the cigars included in the sampler and a brief overview of my review:

My Father La Opulencia Toro

With its unique Mexican wrapper, this cigar has quite a bit of pepper notes along with some fruity undertones. The pepper stung me a little, but I was relieved when the Earth and chocolate notes increased throughout, giving a nice balance. I was a little put off by the burn, which was pretty wavy, but the change in flavors made me almost forget about the crookedness of the burn until the pepper notes kicked back in. I probably would have scored higher if it wasn’t for that. Unfortunately, I am easily annoyed when I have to touch up a cigar too many times.

Rocky Patel Sun Grown Maduro Robusto

My highest-scored cigar in the sampler. If the first half of my smoke was the same as the second, I probably would have scored this cigar even higher. I love how smooth and complex these flavors were, giving both spice and sweetness with an added touch of “wood” tones. The flavors balanced so well that they flowed right into each other. Also, I am typically in a rush, unfortunately, when I smoke, and this one took me less than an hour which was a winner in my book.

Aging Room Quattro Original Concerto

There is something about bread and nutty flavors that has always appealed to me. This is a subtle smoke that is pretty smooth throughout without changing many flavor profiles. I like how there is a hint of spice without being overpowering. I can see myself smoking this every morning without any hesitation. You can definitely tell the cigar has “aged well” over time.

La Historia E.P. Carrillo E-III

A perfect smoke for the novice smoker, this cigar doesn’t show much intensity with any of the flavors but has a nice balance between the earth and pepper tones. There is also a nice fruity taste midway through, which gives the cigar a mix of that salty/sweet appeal. I am a big fan of most E.P. Carrillo sticks, however this one (even though it is still great) falls a little short for me.

Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua No. 2

Bold with an intense pepper flavor, this cigar isn’t for the novice smoker. There are hints of creamy caramel and chocolate with evens out the spiciness that develops throughout. A little pricey with the cost, this smoke would be ideal for a special occasion if you can handle the flavor. But just beware, don’t smoke it on an empty stomach!

All of these cigars were great in their own ways, even with some minor flaws. I definitely recommend trying this sampler and giving them a shot. Not only is the sampler affordable, but the flavors are unique and can cater to many different palettes. I can’t wait to see what other samplers are out there to try. You honestly never know what you may or may not enjoy until you try!
