Winter Smoking with Trinidad
It feels like the frozen tundra here in Pennsylvania. Granted that may be a little dramatic, but this Floridian can’t handle these Winter temperatures. Not only that, but I am struggling to smoke outdoors as my hands shake and the wind is constantly affecting the burn. So, this month has been difficult to say the least to enjoy my smoke time! Plus, the recent holiday’s don’t help either where it feels like everything is in overdrive. However, recently I smoked the Trinidad Espiritu Series No. 1 Toro which proved to be worth bearing the temps (even though I was in my garage)! A collaboration between A.J. Fernandez and Altidas USA, this 2019 cigar is a Nicaraguan Puro (all of the blend is grown in Nicaragua) and has received top ratings among cigar professionals. The cigar is very veiny and oily which showcases the blue and gold double bands that have the Trinidad logo.
Like I said earlier, I am in my garage smoking as it is around 19 degrees outside, and the wind is trying to kill me on my patio. The first half of my smoke is filled with heavy smoke and a peppery toast taste. I didn’t realize this cigar would be so smoky (don’t laugh), so I immediately opened my garage door before which forced me to retreat due to the cold temperatures. There really isn’t much dimension in the first half as the flavor profile stays the same till about the midway point.
Fruity Notes
I feel like we are in this weird off point after the holidays where work is just kind of there and it still feels like vacation, but it’s not. I never really enjoyed this time, as it just feels like you are waiting for the inevitability of going back to the heavy workload. My mom is able to visit from Florida during these holiday times, so it has been nice to have some family time again. At the midway point, the flavor changes slightly adding some fruit notes. The pepper has also amped up some, creating some nice new flavors. The burn is starting to be a little wavy, which I was able to fix quickly.
Nutty Notes on the Second Half
In the second half of smoke, the flavor changes again with the introduction of nutty notes (my favorite I admit). There is also some sweetness towards the end of my smoke too which was a nice balance between the other flavors. The cigar maintained its medium bodies strength throughout. The smoke produced I felt was a little excessive, but it didn’t deter anything with the cigar profile. This is a cigar that could literally be smoked at anytime and is enjoyable. It is the epitome of an “easy going” smoke and I am here for it. My smoke time was around 1 hour and 4 minutes.
