First Impressions of the Nicaraguan Series by AJ Fernandez Rothschild

On this Summer Day, I lit this stick expecting a perfectly fine, slightly boring budget Nicaraguan puro. You know—the kind of cigar that keeps you company while you read a book or contemplate reorganizing the garage (busy work of course). But this thing came out swinging and I dig it. First off, the double blue-and-gold band looks like it’s way more expensive than it is while the wrapper is rugged, chocolate brown, and an itty bitty—not sure how else to describe it. I have never smoked this cigar and am looking forward to it!

Flavor Profile: Medium to Full-Bodied Transition

The first half of my smoke struts in at medium body but quickly realizes the party needs more energy and it speeds to full pretty quickly. Pepper and cinnamon fight for the spotlight, while dark chocolate and earth tones hold it down in the background. The cigar so far has a caramel smoothness, like the first sip of your morning coffee. By the end of the first half, the pepper has calmed down and invited some nutty notes, with a hint of fruit kind of crashing the party. There is also a new spice flavor, which I can’t put my finger on. I don’t really get it, but I like it. There are quite a variety of different flavors, but they all seem to mesh well. Also, I am honestly reorganizing the garage, so I have to take a minute to relax and enjoy.

Construction and Burn Quality

The final half cranks the spice back up—pepper makes a shocking comeback like a band playing its biggest hit for the encore (I admit I hate that). But here’s the kicker: even to the nub, it keeps burning straight and drawing smooth. No need for a touch-up or anything, which is a bonus. And for the budget price? You’ll feel like you are really getting a great deal. AJ Fernandez clearly knew what he was doing here: it’s balanced, consistent, and way more polished than it has any right to be at this price. Every stick I’ve tried has been reliable, and honestly the cheaper the better for me.

Complexity and Smoking Experience

If I had to nitpick, it’s not the most in your face cigar. The complexity is more “slow reveal” than “grand fireworks show.” But that’s a tiny blunder in a cigar that nails so many other things. It’s also a cigar that can be for a novice or seasoned smoker.

Final Verdict: A 92-Rated Bargain Smoke

Overall, the Nicaraguan Series Rothschild is the kind of cigar that makes you question why you’ve been paying double for smokes that aren’t half as great. It’s flavorful, it’s dependable, and it’s the cheapest cigar you will have in your humidor. Go pick one up, your wallet will appreciate you.
