Introduction
For these next few months, I will be reviewing cigars out of Cigar Aficionado's #2 Cigars of the Year Sampler. In this sampler are five top-rated cigars from well-known brands in the industry. All of these cigars are medium-full-bodied and boost a ton of rich flavors. The first cigar I am smoking is the My Father La Opulencia Toro. My Father Cigars uses the Mexican Rosado Oscuro wrapper (never before used) along with both Corojo and Criollo binders. The wrapper is very oily which intensifies the green and pink bands. There is also a bright green-colored footband (which I always seem to love for some reason). Introduced in 2017, this cigar gained popularity pretty quickly and solidified it as one of the top-rated cigars of that year.
Currently, I am on my patio freezing my butt off. It is a brisk 30 degrees and I am dreading the next few months of Winter. As most of you know, I grew up in Florida and the cold weather makes me crabby. My dog is also cold and has decided to sit on my lap and try to get warm (even though he is wearing a sweater). With it being Monday, I am up extra early to get the day started. I recently switched jobs and this has caused some changes in my work schedule. I am pairing my smoke with Italian coffee, and light cream.
The First Half of My Father La Opulencia
The first half of my smoke brings out a ton of pepper and earth tones. As the first half comes to a close the pepper takes a backseat leading into more chocolate with the continuance of the earth tones. There is still quite a bit of pepper on the retrohale though, which makes my lips sting in this cold. There is a bit of sweetness too, almost fruity. These flavors continue all the way into the second half. I am having to touch up quite a bit during this time also as the burn was a little crooked. The draw was pretty close to perfect though.
The Second Half of My Smoke
I have now resorted to wearing gloves because my hands feel close to frozen. The second half of my smoke increased the earth tones and the pepper notes practically disappeared. There is a bit of a wood taste mixed in with the chocolate, but it is fairly minimal compared to the earth tones. I had to touch up one more time, as the burn was pretty wavy. I think maybe my outside elements had something to do with it as well. I got myself a second cup of coffee and I am now wishing I had some type of vanilla creamer to mix in, I am thinking that would be a good combination. At the end of my hour and a half of smoke time, I pretty much enjoyed the cigar. Having tried multiple different cigars from the My Fathers brand, I feel this one is definitely in the top tier. I feel like I need to smoke it a few more times to get a good handle on the different flavors.
