The weather outside is frightful. Oh, so frightful. I can tell you the past few weeks have been filled with cold, snow, ice, and everything I disdain about Winter. I am not the biggest fan of smoking outside in the cold, which has delayed my smoke time quite a bit lately. However, I am braving the elements and am smoking the final cigar out of Cigar Aficionado’s #2 Cigars of the Year Sampler: Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua No. 2. In 2021, this cigar received the #2 Cigar of the Year and is made specifically from A.J. Fernandez (San Lotano Cigars) to commemorate the brand’s 85th anniversary. I waited to smoke this cigar last due to its reputation for being a strong and intense smoke. This torpedo-shaped cigar is dark and oily, with a shiny gold and black band.
I have retreated to smoking in the garage. The current temp is a bleak 15 degrees, and I honestly didn’t want to try and not feel my hands throughout my smoke time. The first half I am hit immediately with pepper. The pepper made my lips tingle, and my nose started to run. I was taken back from the how strong it was. After about ten minutes, the pepper notes begin to calm down, with the introduction of both leather and chocolate coming through. However, the pepper is still there through the retrohale and still gives quite a bit of spice.
Not a Smoke for a Beginner
The second half of my smoke brought out more chocolate creaminess with a hint of caramel. Don’t forget that pepper, though, it never went away. Like I said prior, beginners stay away from this one because it will knock you on your butt. The burn of this cigar is also great. Often, with torpedo’s you can get a crazy burn, but not this one. The draw is also on point, which helped. The longer I smoke this cigar, the stronger it gets. I am glad I am sitting down, honestly.
At the end of my hour-and-a-half-smoke time, I need more candy and another beverage. I had paired my smoke with black coffee due to the freezing temperatures but ran out about midway through. I am honestly perplexed by how strong this cigar was. Personally, I would have enjoyed a little less pepper, but I understand why it is so popular. The price tag is a little steep (around $18, but I’ve seen lower online) so this may be a stick that you smoke on those extra special occasions.
