Dedicated to Carillo’s Mother
“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…..” Don’t mind me, as I am singing Christmas tunes for the rest of the month. Today I am smoking the 2014 #2 cigar of the year: La Historia E-III by E.P. Carillo from Cigar Aficionado’s #2 Cigar of the Year sampler. The weather is starting to be quite frightful here, with low temps and grey skies to add to the “almost Winter” blues. The Carrillo name has been prominent in the cigar world for many years and with the La Historia line being dedicated to Carillo’s mother, you can obviously tell that the Carrillo family has been involved in the cigar-making process since the beginning. The La Historia E-III has two red bands and one fancy blue foot band (my favorite) that displays the Carrillo name. There is a veiny San Andres wrapper with Nicaraguan filler.
The First Half of the Smoke
The first half of my smoke I am instantly hit with black pepper and Earth tones. I am in my usual smoking spot on my back patio, trying to brave the cold. I am currently in the process of planning my work week and feeling a bit overwhelmed. My dog, unfortunately, has not been feeling well these past few days, so I am currently having him sit next to me on the nearby patio chair. There are some slight changes at the end of the first half, a mild sweetness. It does seem a bit fruity, but there are coffee notes mixed in as well. I like the mixed blend of bitterness and sweetness.Sweetness Disappears Into Coffee and Earthy
At the start of the second half, the sweetness disappears, and I pretty much just have the coffee and Earth tones. I would say that this is consistent for the next 20 minutes or so. The burn and construction are pretty flawless so far, with the draw being slightly tight. The cigar teeters with being medium to full-bodied. Towards the final half of my smoke, the black pepper increases heavily. I was very surprised by this, as it felt like a final push for the cigar to be more on the full-bodied side. At this point, the weather has gotten even colder and I am grateful that I wore a heavier coat.
Nice Balance
At the end of my hour and half smoke time, I would say this cigar doesn’t have many different flavor notes, but it does provide a nice balance between sweetness and bitterness. It is a cigar that beginner smokers could enjoy because it is not overwhelming and that experienced smokers would enjoy as well. I have always been a fan of Carrillo cigars in general, and this one fits in perfectly.
