A Stout Celebration for the Big 4-0
There are few better excuses to light up a cigar than your birthday—especially when you’re staring down the barrel of 40 like it’s a freight train of back pain, old age, and early bedtimes. This year, I chose the Fat Bottom Betty Gordito as my celebratory smoke. At 6x60, it’s short, stout, and frankly built like I feel these days: compact, a little thick around the middle, but still ready to party (until 9:00 p.m.).
Sweet Greetings and Bakery Notes
Right off the bat, the Fat Bottom Betty greets you with a sweet, dessert-like profile that feels more like cake than anything else. Draped in a dark Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, this cigar is sweet—but not in a way that smacks you over the head like cheap cologne. Instead, it opens with notes of chocolate, coffee, and a creamy vanilla sweetness that makes you wonder if you accidentally wandered into a bakery instead of your backyard. I live very close to a Maple Donuts, so I smell this often. It is great and horrible at the same time.
Solid Build and Thick Clouds

The draw is easy—maybe a little too easy, like my commitment to not take so many vacations this year. The smoke is thick, billowing out in clouds that make you look far cooler than you actually are. Construction is solid, the burn line is mostly even, and the ash holds on longer than my metabolism did in my twenties.
Midway Complexity and Realizations
At the halfway point, the cigar settles into its groove. The sweetness is still present, but it dials back just enough to let some more traditional tobacco flavors come through. There is a subtle earthiness and a touch of nuttiness that adds complexity, like realizing you now care about how much protein you consume and if you are drinking enough water. There is also a bit of spiciness—just a little tingle to remind you you’re alive and not yet fully fossilized. The balance here is impressive. The cigar manages to avoid becoming one-dimensional, which is more than I can say for my current sleep schedule.
Approachable Strength
Strength-wise, it stays in the mild-to-medium range, making it approachable and easygoing. It’s the kind of cigar you can enjoy without needing to sit down and question your life choices—though turning another year older might do that for you anyway. It did for me, anyway.
The Final Stretch and Indulgent Finishes

Heading into the final stretch, the cigar starts to become sweet again. The chocolate and coffee notes resurface more prominently, accompanied by a lingering creaminess that coats the palate. It’s rich without being overwhelming, like a good dessert… or a second slice of birthday cake you absolutely didn’t need but ate anyway. I prefer cookie cake myself.
The burn remains consistent, and the cigar doesn’t get harsh or bitter—a major win, especially as some cigars can turn on you near the end. Instead, it finishes smooth, mellow, and satisfying, like finally accepting that “early to bed” is not a punishment but a lifestyle. It is a fun, flavorful cigar that doesn’t take itself too seriously—perfect for a birthday smoke when you’re only one year away from 40 and trying to pretend that’s fine. It’s approachable, consistent, and just indulgent enough to feel like a treat.
The Verdict
Would I smoke it again? Absolutely. Will I still be saying that when I actually hit 40? Ask me then—preferably while handing me another one.
